The most complete business of its kind in the country. It is thoroughly systematized and divided into departments-each being in charge of a competent Manager-as mentioned below.


Wholesale Department. Headquarters located on the first floor. All business connected with the wholesale and jobbing trade is referred to it. The immense stock of Stationery in all its branches, occupying portions of three floors, is under its management.


Retail and Library Department. On the first floor. Whatever is for sale in this entire establishment can be purchased at retail in this department. The miscellaneous, scientific, medical and theological books are specially under its supervision. All are thoroughly classified, there being nearly two hundred divisions and subdivisions, embracing every prominent subject of reference.


Law Department. On the first floor. It embraces the law books-about thirty volumes; and the legal blanks-over 1500-published by the firm; and a very large and complete stock of text-books and reports imported from the East and Great Britain.


Educational Department. On the first floor. It includes such school books and school stationery as are published and manufactured by the firm, and an immense stock of school books and school apparatus imported from the East. The main stock is stored is deep alcoves extending along nearly one entire side of the basement.


Music Department. On the second floor. Embraces several lines of pianos, square and upright, and a large variety of cabinet organs and melodeons. Also, a fine stock of sheet music and music books. Latest music periodicals kept on file for free reference.


Subscription Department. On the second floor. The firm has the agency for the best and most popular subscription books, maps and pictures published in the East, and has a large corps of sub-agents constantly in the field in every part of the Coast. Agents wanted.


Printing and Lithographing Department. This department occupies the entire third floor, and has the necessary steam presses and machinery for executing all kinds of printing, lithographing, engraving, initial stamping, etc.


Blank Book Manufacturing Department. Occupies the entire fourth floor, 75 by 170; contains the most complete set of machinery for ruling. folding, binding and manufacturing blank books, to found on the Pacific Coast. The machinery of the printing and binding departments is propelled by an engine and boiler located under the Stevenson Street sidewalk.


Publishing Department. Bancroft's Historical Library. on the fifth floor, is the basis of important scientific and descriptive works of a local natare, and maps and books of reference relating to the Pacific Coast, to be issued by the firm, from time to time.
