INTRODUCTORY.
DENVER DIRECTORY OFFICE, May, 1890.
Another year has been added to the age of our beautiful and prosperous city since our last publication, and this the eighteenth annual volume of the DENVER CITY DIREC- TORY gives ample and indisputable proof of its continued prosperity and growth in the large accessions to our population during the last year. For further evidence of our prog- ress we have only to look about the business portion of the city and there see the large and elegant buildings just completed or in course of erection, all of which would be credit- able to any of the older cities of the world. We may also go for miles in any direction through the residence portion of our city and see buildings on every hand ranging in style from the elegant and costly mansion of the wealthy to the neat and comfortable cottage of the mechanic and tradesman, showing that among all classes there is a degree of prosperity that warrants such thrift, and also that there exists a confidence in the future of Denver whose wonderful growth is we think unparalelled. The village without wealth or influence with a population of 4,759 in 1870 has become a metropolis with 157,089 inhab- itants, more than keeping pace with the phenomenal growth of the State of which it is the capital, and to-day commanding the attention of the capitalist and manufacturer in nearly all portions of the civilized world, thus adding to our wealth and importance.
Denver being the great commercial center of the vast country west of the Missouri River, with its unexcelled climate, situated in the midst of the greatest bullion-producing region in the world, rich in treasures which need only to be unlocked, offers unexcelled advantages for manufacturing industries, which are gradually being added each year, bring- ing new establishments indicating our future not only as a manufacturing city but also as one of the greatest cities of the continent.
The present volume contains 54,548 names, being an increase over last year of 10,979, which according to our usual method of estimating gives us an increase during the past year of 31,617 inhabitants, making our population at this date 157,098, and we venture to say that should the coming census of the city cover the same ground and be made with the same care that we have observed in taking the information for this work it could differ but little from the figures given'above.
We fearlessly submit the present volume to the criticism of all with the belief that there is no publication of this character that will stand closer examination in regard to accuracy or completeness. We shall endeavor to maintain the same degree of accuracy in the future that has characterized our work in the past. Being aware that our patrons appreciate the conscientious care and untiring energy which we have devoted to this publi- cation we return our sincere thanks to those who have assisted us by extending their patronage and otherwise shown an interest in our work.
