THE HARTFORD CITY DIRECTORY has now been published for thirty years, showing an annual increase in population of this city and size of the work, from a pamphlet of 72 pages to a bound volume of 535 pages, and population from 10,000 to about 45,000, with an increase in names from 1625 to 10,427 ! We have this year added 2265 new names and have erased and noted 4394 removals and alterations from last year. Thus our citizens will see that we now publish a work of upwards of seven times as many pages as it was the first years of its issue, which with the greatly enhanced price for paper and labor thereon, would bring each copy of this work over $7.00 a copy to correspond with the price paid for its first issues-50 cents a copy.

We hope the citizens of Hartford will give us a merit- ed liberal support this year by purchasing more copies than heretofore, and that purchasers will refuse to lend their respective copies to citizens of this city, and thus compel borrowers to become purchasers. This should be done in justice to the publisher and to our patrons.

We have superseded the cloth binding heretofore used with a more substantial style, and issued at an earlier date than usual.

The following table giving the number of pages and number of names contained in each year's Directory since its publica- tion, shows the steady and rapid growth of the City of Hartford:

EXPLANATIONS.

THE business location of individuals engaged in business for themselves, is first mentioned in connection with their names, and then their place of residence. Especial pains has been taken to ascertain the name, residence and occupation of every male person, twenty-one years of age and upwards. But when mistakes or omissions have heretofore occurred, in nine cases out of ten, they have been caused by those giving the information.

When two different numbers are given in connection with one name, and only one street mentioned, the number first given is the place of business, and the second the residence, and both in the same street.

The letter h. signifies house; res. residence; st. street; bds. boards; av. avenue; r. rear, &c.

CITY DIRECTORY. 31

GUIDE TO THE LOCATION AND NUMBERS OF STREETS AND AVENUES IN THE CITY OF HARTFORD.

The streets running north and south are invariably numbered from the south, except Wethersfield avenue and Seymour st. number- ing from the north; those running east and west are num- bered from Main street, or from the end of the street pointing thereto. Odd numbers on the SOUTH and WEST sides, uniformly. The names of all streets running north and south ( except Main, ) change at Park river, and all east and west at crossing Muin st. This Guide indicates at a glance the proximate locality of any required number on any street; for example, if you desire to know about where No. 120 Albany street is located, this guide shows you that, being an even number, it will be found on the north side, and about mid-way between Williams and Greene streets. This is a new feature added to the Directory, and will be found of great practical convenience.
