A LARGE amount of extra expense has been incurred on this Directory over all Directories which have preceded it, in order to make it worthy of patronage, as well as cred- itable to the city. The publisher looks with confidence to a discriminating public, for a generous support, in its annual issue. The Engravings of six Houses of worship are presented to its patrons this year, which have been executed expressly for the Subscriber, by SETH H. CLARK, of this city, from original drawings. Views of all the others will be presented next year.
We have endeavored to collect, with the greatest accu- racy, all the information that comes within the scope of this work, and especial pains has been taken to ascertain the name, residence and occupation of every male person, of and over 21 years of age.
As the subscriber will continue to issue it annually on or about May Ist, it will be his endeavor to make it a work deserving of universal approbation, by the citizens of Hartford, for its accuracy, neatness of execution, &c., &c.

STREETS AND LANES.
Explanations.
THE names of the individuals engaged in business for themselves, is first mentioned in the line with their names and then their place of residence. The names of all male persons over 21 years of age, are, as far as possible, given.
When two different numbers are given in connection with one name, and only one street mentioned, the number first given is the place of business, and the second the resi- dence, and both in the same street.
Several streets in the city have not been numbered. This will account for the omission of numbers in connec- tion with certain names.
Many of the streets are badly numbered, duplicate num- bers occurring, owing to the increase of Tenements in such streets, since the buildings in the city were numbered.
For boundaries of Wards, see map as painted, each Ward being numbered, and contiguous ones painted in different colors.
The letter h. signifies house; res. residence; st. street ; bds. boards, &c. &c.
