CENTER CONG. CHURCH.
FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH.
THIS Church was originally gathered in Newtown, (now Cambridge,) Mass., and was duly organized by the Installation of THOMAS HOOKER as pastor, and SAMUEL STONE as teacher, October 11th, 1633. It is supposed that William Goodwin was ordained as ruling elder, and Andrew Warner as deacon at the same time.
In June, 1636, Messrs. Hooker and Stone, with about one hundred of their people, removed to this place. Here the Church was permanently planted, being the first Church established in Connecticut; and here the ordinances of the gospel have been regularly administered from that time to the present.
This Church embraced the territory now occupied by the Churches of the City; of East Hartford, and of West

NORTH BAPTIST CHURCH.
131
FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH.
The First Baptist Church in Hartford had its origin in the following manner. In the month of March, in the year 1789, " two or three Baptist brethren, and other friends," conferred on the expediency of establishing a church of the Baptist denomination in the city, and the proposition was received with favor. On the fifth of August the first bap- tism was administered. September 7th, at 7 o'clock, A. M., a meeting was held at the dwelling house of Luther Sav- age, and it was then resolved to commence public worship on the Sabbath, as a Baptist congregation. Accordingly public services on that day were held in the dwelling-house of John Bolles, commencing October 18th, and during the ensuing season, a number of persons were " baptized on the personal profession of their faith in Christ." The Church

Prior and subsequent to their constitution, they were favored with the ministrations of neighboring ministers, particularly with the labors of the REV. JOHN WINCHELL, and REV. ADAM HAMILTON. The Church experienced a succession of difficulties until 1796, which prevented them from acquiring strength.

NORTH CONG. CHURCH.
The following extract from the letter addressed by the ninety-six original members to the parent Church, prior to their dismission and organization as a distinct body, will show the origin of the formation of this Church.
" The First Church and Society having become so nu- merous that all the members could not well be accommo- dated with seats in the meeting.house, and many, from time to time, having been prevented from joining us for the same reason, several meetings of the members were called, in order to take into consideration the existing in- convenience, and what measures might be adopted for re- moving it.
" It was resolved to be expedient, and advice was given, at several successive meetings, that a number of the Church and Society should withdraw for the purpose of forming a new and distinct Church and Congregational Society, and of erecting a new meeting-house in this city. All these meetings were distinguished for the harmony and unanimity of their proceedings."
In pursuance of the above resolutions and advice, nine- ty-six members of the Church, formally separated from the Society, and associating with others, formed a new Congregational Society.
At its organization, the Church consisted of 102 mem- bers, 39 males and 63 females.
- On the 1st of December, 1824, the Rev. CARLOS WILCOX was installed Pastor of the Church, and sustained the re- lation till May 31st, 1826, when he was dismissed at his own request, on account of impaired health.

ST. JOHN'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH.
ST. JOHN'S CHURCH,
WAS organized March 18th, 1841, and the corner stone of this edifice was laid on Wednesday, July 14th, 1841, by the Rt. Rev. T. C. BROWNELL, D. D., LL. D., Bishop of the Diocese of Connecticut, and on the 20th of April, 1842, the church having been completed with extraordinary despatch, was consecrated by the same Prelate, to the glory and worship of the Holy Trinity, by the name of ST. JOHN'S CHURCH.
The interior of the church, of which our cut presents so favorable an external view, is in strict keeping with the . architectural style, and the holy offices to which it is devoted. The design was furnished by HENRY AUSTIN, of New Haven, and is very generally admired for its sim- plicity and effect. Among the ornaments of the church

must be mentioned a beautiful font, of the finest white marble, and an organ of superior tone and finish, built by the Messrs. Hook, of Boston. The chancel is situated in a richly wainscotted recess, at the east end, and is lighted by a lofty mullioned window.
The parish of St. John's was formed on the 18th of March, 1841; owing its origin to the great prosperity and over-growth of the parish of Christ Church, in this city . On the 12th of March in the succeeding year, the Rev. A. CLEVELAND COXE, was elected to the Rectorship, and entered upon his duties at the Easter following. He was Instituted on the 22d of October, 1842, and continues Rec- tor at this date. LEMUEL HUMPHREY and J. M. GOODWIN, Esquires, are the Churchwardens, and WM. H. GILBERT, Esq., is Clerk of the parish.'
About two hundred and fifty persons were officially reported as communicants in June, 1846, and the parish though yet in its infancy, is already large and increasing.
