INTRODUCTION.

THE present number of the NEW HAVEN DIRECTORY contains about 2750 names-420 more than the first number, published in February, 1840. About 200 of the list for 1840 are not to be found in this volume, consequently, there are upwards of 600 new names; and the publisher confidently hopes that he has so far succeeded in correcting the errors and supplying the deficiencies of last year, as to make his work acceptable and useful to the public.

Many notices of private and public enterprize, and improvements, might be collected within the limits of our city, which would render our humble work more interesting and valuable ; but, as we are only permitted to stretch ourself "according to the covering," it has been thought best, as soon as practicable, to favor the public with such mat- ter in another form.

No. 2 of the New Haven Directory is therefore given to the citizens with the expectation that it will receive support sufficient to ensure its annual publication. J. M. P.
