BY JAMES M. PATTEN.

NEW HAVEN: PRINTED BY J. H. BENHAM.

THE publisher truly grateful for the patronage which the for- mer numbers of this work has received, respectfully presents the FIFTH NUMBER OF THE NEW HAVEN DIRECTORY, hoping that the exertions which have been made to render the catalogue of names as nearly correct as possible may be appreciated by its patrons.

It was the desire of the compiler this year to have made many useful additions to the matter appended to the Directory, but ill health has prevented any considerable improvement in that de- partment .- In future numbers a different system will be adopted. Since experience has shown that the work is greater than the compiler ought to undertake alone, the labor will be so divided so as to give to each department its proper attention and insure its publication at least two weeks earlier than the date of the present number.
