The present volume, (number twenty-four,) of the NEW HAVEN DIRECTORY, contains 10,965 names, being only 9 more than last year. The changes have been as numerous as ever, and the new names about the same as last year, 2,056.
A large number having joined the army, the names would of neces- sity have fallen off, had we not inserted as far as practicable, those who have enlisted and yet consider this their home, and would return here if they lived to leave the military service. That they have gone to resist the traitors who have ungratefully risen against the govern- ment is no reason why their names should be erased from the roll of our residents, but rather a reason for their especial entry upon it as a legion of honor. With our best exertions, we must have missed a large number of this worthy class. But probably the majority of those whom we have not found are minors, and would not have been entered on the Directory had they been here ; so that their ab- sence does not diminish the legitimate names of the Directory to an amount near equal to their numbers.
Although (notwithstanding the awful war that still convulses the world,) the business of the city has warranted a large amount of build- ing, yet there have not been any structures of a public character completed except the City Hall, which was ready for use some time last fall. We have procured an elegant Wood Engraving of this fine edifice, which we insert in the Directory, opposite page 54. It was executed by LOCKWOOD SANFORD, in the best style of that accomplish- ed artist. We have inserted on page 435 a directory of the City Hall, containing a numerical statement of the offices and uses to which each room is appropriated.
We are happy to know that the articles, " In and Around New Haven," have been received with favor. They are continued this year, and the article of last year is reprinted with some corrections.
We have this year introduced as a new feature, a list of firms and the members composing them, which will be found of service to the public generally, as a matter of business reference. This was deter- mined upon by the solicitation of several gentlemen, after the print- ing was nearly completed, and in consequence of inserting this list, we are some two or three days later in our issue than we were last year.
The great advance in every kind of merchandise, especially materials for printing, assures us that we cannot furnish the Directory at the late price, and meet the expenses of its publication. We are therefore re- luctantly compelled, in order to make the work self-sustaining, to advance the price to $2.
With acknowledgments to patrons, we hope our work will prove mutually beneficial. J. H. B.
