The City Court has cognizance of all civil causes where the title of land is not concerned, and has the same power and authority and proceeds in the same manner in granting executions as the County Courts of this State, provided the cause of action arise within the limits, and one or both of the parties is a resident of the city ; and an appeal from this court lies to the Superior Court.

The Mayor and Aldermen are severally possessed of the powers and authority which by law are given to a Justice of the Peace.

UNITED STATES COURTS.

UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT .- Andrew T. Judson, Judge. William S. Hollabird, Attorney. Charles A. Ingersoll, Clerk. Norris Wilcox, Marshal. Erastus Osborne, Charles A. Judson, Deputies. Held at New Haven, fourth Tuesday in February and August ; at Hartford, fourth Tuesday in May and November.

UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT .- Held at the city of Wash- ington, on the first Monday in February, annually. At New Haven, last Wednesday in April. At Hartford, September 17.

FIRE DEPARTMENT.

THERE are few subjects pertaining to municipal economy that are more universally and intensely interesting than the prevention and extinguishment of Fires. The citizens of New Haven, with abundant cause for thankfulness, have, perhaps had sufficient experience of the desolating power of this master element, to admonish them of the necessity for great vigilance and carefulness in guarding against its future ravages. A dependence upon such casual and promiscuous crowds as usually rally at the alarm of fire is always precarious. Our citizens have not been unmindful of this fact. There are now eleven regularly organized companies belonging to the fire department, (not including the Fair Haven companies,) and we believe that the affairs of each are conducted with interest sufficient to insure their prompti- tude in all cases where their services are required. The members of these companies are by law exempt from military duty, and city poll tax.

In making repairs, or creating bills in any way against the Fire Department, particular care should betaken to act under the authority of the proper Standing Committee.

NEW HAVEN has justly been denominated an "emporium of Litera- ture," and in naming the various institutions which dot the whole extent of our city it is perhaps useless to occupy space in speaking of the facilities here enjoyed for literary attainments. Kingsley, Samuel J. Hitchcock, Chauncey A. Goodrich, Roger S. Baldwin, Henry White and Wyllys Warner. Hawley Olmstead, A. M., Preceptor. Wyllys Warner, Secretary and Treasurer.
