FAIR HAVEN.

FAIR HAVEN is a flourishing village, situate on both sides of the river Quinipiac, about one and a half miles east of the city of New Haven, and contains about 1,200 inhabitants. That part of the village on the west side of the river is within the limits of New Haven, and that on the east side in the town of East Haven.

The public buildings are a Congregational Church erected in 1830, a Methodist Episcopal Church erected in 1835, and a Collegiate and Commercial Institute established in 1836, where all the higher branches of education are intended to be taught.

The oyster business, which is the leading occupation of the inhab- itants, constantly increases. It commences in October and closes in April. The quantity caught in the village varies from 20,000 to 40,000 bushels annually, and at certain seasons of the year from 300 to 400 boats are engaged in taking them.

No definite estimate of the quantity of oysters brought here from the bays and coast of Virginia and Maryland and other places, has been made since the winter of 1835-6 during which time the amount was 139,841 bushels. In the summer of 1835 there were brought here 5,000 bushels of round clams, of which 2,000 bushels were caught in this vicinity. On the shores in the village it is estimated there are dug 4,000 bushels of long clams every season.

A large business is carried on in the manufacture of lime from oyster shells. It is calculated there may be made 200,000 bushels a year.

A large mercantile business is done in the village, and the business in general and population is constantly increasing ; so that the village has deservedly the reputation of being one of the most prosperous in the State.

Fair Haven was formerly called Dragon, and the tradition is, that at the time of the first settlement of New Haven a particular sandy point about 40 rods below the bridge on the east side of the river was a place where large numbers of seals were accustomed to bask in the sun. At that time these animals were called Dragons-hence the name Dragon Point.
