It was agreed by ye Reuerend mr Chauncie, and ye comittee of ye elder church of Chrift in Windfore: and by ye Reuerend mr Wood- bridg, & ye comittee of ye congregation wth him, to call a Councell confifting of ye elders and meffengers of ye fiue Churches, of Hart- ford, farmington, Wethersfield and Midelton, to heare, confider, & determin, all matters of controuertie yt are still depending between ye societies aforefaid, or between ye first church & any of ye mem- bers thereof: And what they fhall determin & aduife to be attended, by one or both parties, or societies, or ye members therof fhall be by them fubmitted unto in point of order both in their prefent and future walke.

Honoed Reuerend & beloued in or Lord Jefus.

The deepe fence yt we haue of ye name of God yt is much conferned in you, and the choife comandment of Jefus Christ, & this is of my comandment yt you loue one another, together wth ye fad [ ] ye dif[u]nion, & deuition according to yt of or faueor a kingdom deuided againft it felfe cannot ftan[d] but it is brought to doffola- tion, we cannot but conceiue it expedient & neceffary to comend this follemly as our joint aduice to your felfes, according to what is unanimofely defired, by ye two congregations yt we fhold give our Councell as to your prefent & future walke.

CHURCH CONTROVERSY.

I Firft yt both congregations reunite & walk together in the fame way of order. And yt this way of order wherin they fhould meet in their future walk, be the known fetled walk of ye firft Church, wch we underftand to be ye congregationall way of church order according to ye word of God, as it hath bin declared by ye Sinods in 48 & 62 this to be peacably & orderly attended untill better light in an orderly way doth appear. unto ye X.

2 That ye method of this union be yt thefe members of ye fecond Con- gregation who ware of ye firft Congregation return to ther former ftation therin either in full comunion or otherwife: And yt all fuch members of ye fecond congregation wheither formerly of ye first Church or not being pfons of a competenty of knowledg & unblam- able Life be alfoe entertained to full comunion wth ye first Church, And in cafe any diffatisfaction fhold arife in ye church conferning ye entertainment of any of the faid members, yt then ye Reuerend mr Rowlandson & mr Hooker fhall examin & paffe their fence upon ye pfon or pfons objected againft and according to fuch Judgment they fhall be accepted: onely we wold be underftood yt we account not their going off in a day of difficultie to be a fufficient impediment to theire full comunion.

3 That mr Chauncie be continued in his office & imployment acting according to ye profeffed Congregationall principles as aboue ex- preffed, And that mr Woodbridg be received to comunion in all ordinances as occafion is and admitted for a helpe in preaching jointly wth mr Chauncie yt ther may be better knowledg of each others principles, And if ther be not agreement, ye Councell will re- fume their feffion ye firft wensday in Octobr next hauing for yt pur- pofe adjorned to yt time (except fum exigence in ye meane time give occafion to ye moderators to call them fooner together wch by ye Counc[ell] they are impowred to doe) when they may give their

4 We may not omitte the reall necefsety of a day of follemn humiliation to be obferued yt you doe jointly chaften yr felues befor ye Lord & be deeply afhamed for whatfoeuer hath bin provoking to ye eyes of his glory & pour out your hearts unto ye Lord yt he wold in great merty pardon all your fins, effectually heale your fpirits, & fettell you in a right way of gofpell union to ye Glory of God & yr owne eternall welfare.

And Laftly we doe earneftly councell & advife you to forget all former animofetys with whatfoeuer of muta[ ] offence & irritation hath by ye uncomfortable motions of a day of temptation fallen in amoug you, And laboring confientiofly & in ye feare of God, foe to carry towards & wth one another as may be for the prays of ye God of peace, & your mutuall comfort, & edification in him wch is indeed ye great end of all ordinances: we befeech you in ye bowels of Chrift not to forget ye fin & forrow of a day of contention you now for a confiderable time haue bin laboring vnder: Alafs for the dishonor reflected upon the name of or deareft Lord, & ye prejudice done to the foles of men by this meanes: you haue reafon to know what ye holy ghoft saith in the 3d of James 16th where inuiing & ftrife is ther is confufion & eury euill worke ye experienc fadly tells you ye certinty of his word therin : the wisdome from aboue is of another nature & tendancie vers 17th the wisdome yt is from aboue is firft pure then peacable gentell & eafie to be entreated full of merfy & good fruit wthout partialety & without hipocrefie yt you may be furnifhed wth what is needfull therin for the attainment of ye end defired it conferns you earneftly to make adreffes to him yt alone can give it: your fucfefs wherin as it would greatly adorn the gofpell & redound by many thanksgivings

I Concerning the entertainment of thefe of ye 2ª church into full comunion wth the first mentioned in the 2ª head of aduice in thefe words - And yt all fuch members of ye 2ª congregation &c we doe earneftly advife ye pfons conferned. yt in order to fuch comunion, they doe wth readinefs, humility, & chearfullnefs, & in the feare of God adrefs themfelues unto mr Chauncie wth Captn Newbery & John Lomas for examination about their fitnefs in point of knowledg, fub- mitting to teftimonie in point of converfation, And foe being by them found fitte to be prefented & admitted to full comunion by ye confent of the church. 3 That ye Reuerend mr Chauncie & mr Woodbridg during thire abode in their refpectuve works allotted to them in Windfore be honorably maintained by ye whole towne of Windfor collectively taken. You may be pleafed alfoe to take notice yt ye moderators are impowred to call ye councell to a refeffion as they fhall fee caufe, appointing time & place for ye meeting.

Now honored & beloued, It is matter of no littell murning yt uppon the accot of the difquietments raifed by ye great fower of difcord & hitherto (alafs) to far continued among you, their fhould be occafion for us thus to renewe our applications to you. the great aduantag of faint becoming unity among ye people of God, you are not unac- quainted wth, yt ye Lord of peace himfelfe may crowne these en- deauours wth his blessing moulding ye hearts to a mutuall condecenfion to & compliance wth one another in & according to him, yt you may yet experience the abundant returns of his foule edefiing preffenc in his owen ways, yt of you it may be faid there ye Lord comandeth the bleffing euen life for euer more. is ye hearts defire and prayer of your brethren & feruants in Christ.
