NEW HAVEN VITAL RECORDS

Record of Deaths in the Town of New Haven for the seven years preceding 1828 Copied from the original record kept by Thomas Macumber while he held the office of Sexton By Virgil M. Dow

New Haven, February 16th. 1838.

Note .- The following record includes probably all buried during the time in the City burying ground & no others.

The ages of many children it will be observed are left blank ; probably, on account of their being young, their ages were not inscribed on the coffin & did not come to the knowledge of the Sexton. In the Original many names were mifs-spelled, and very likely some are in my copy, notwithstanding my numerous corrections in this particular. V. M. Dow

March 20th 1844

At this date there are living in the town of New Haven, according to Dr. John Skinner, 53 persons of 80 years of age & upward; to wit 32 Females and 21 men. V. M. Dow

¿ See Dwight's Statistics of the City of New Haven 18II page 80 & Seq.

In the year 1821 a considerable part of the Township of New Haven, including West Haven parish &c. was set off to constitute part of the new Town of Orange. This accounts for the appar- ent diminution of the number in the Town except city in the Censuses after that date. The number of inhabitants thus set off was 750 according to Dr. Skinner. In 1839 the Village of Fair Haven was set off from the city but still remains a part of the town as does also the village of Westville. Jan. 1, 1844
