PREFACE.

IN compiling this much required work, it has been our object to make it creditable in its general appearance, useful in all its parts, and worthy of the liberal encouragement the generous citizens of Wash- ington City have bestowed upon it. If we have attained the object for which we have labored, our highest hope is accomplished, and gratitude towards those who cheered us on in the arduous undertak- ing, consummate our wishes, and nerves us to further efforts in endeavoring to render the next year's WASHINGTON DIRECTORY more accurate and still more valuable in its collection of useful information-in fact, to embrace all a work of its character is expected to contain.

We are thankful for the uniform courtesy of those gentlemen in the several Public Departments, to whom we are indebted for correcting the Executive portion of this Directory.

To those who purchase this book, or advertise in it, we hope and believe that the means of information it contains, and its extensive circulation, with the advantages thereby that will accrue to them, in the general diffusion of their business cards, will amply compensate them for their flattering custom.
