Winter Comforts.

WINTER COMFORTS.

To all those whose winter comforts are abridged and fire-side pleasures destroyed, by that greatest of all annoyances, a Smoking House, the undersigned is happy to offer a complete and permanent remedy, by means of his

IMPROVED FIRE PLACE,

So constructed as to cause all gases and light ashes to ascend by cen- tripetal currents, and for which he has received Letters Patent.

The undersigned also professes to understand all the varied causes which produce the descent of smoke ; such as imperfection in the flue of the chimney above the fire-place, the effect of counter currents, &c., and for all of which he is able to provide a remedy, more or less simple, according to the cause. He will here take occasion to ob- serve, that only peculiar situations of the chimney, in regard to sur- rounding objects, render caps and other external contrivances useful, and, in such cases, he makes use of a small cap of his own invention.

As a guarantee of the success of his plan, the undersigned is able to cite the Capitol and other public buildings in the City of Washing- ton. Of the Capitol he will particularly speak, as the difficulties there, owing to the peculiar construction of the chimneys, have been such as to baffle the ingenuity of the 'n. (ny scientific men who have been employed, at a great annual expense, during the past forty years, and this is the only session, since the completion of the building, that the two Houses of Congress have not suffered the greatest inconve- nience from smoke. So great has been the annoyance that some of the committee rooms have been nearly useless.

Terms moderate, and in case of failure no charges made.

Very respectfully, C. W. RUSSELL, H street, between 10th and 11th.

WASHINGTON, D. C.

N. B. All orders left with S. BACON & CO., corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Seventh street, will meet with prompt attention.

Daguerrean Gallery, &c.

PLUMBE NATIONAL GALLERY, Concert Hall, near Brown's Hotel.

The Proprietor of this well-known, highly popular, and long- established Emporium of Photography, in order to keep pace with the rapidly increasing and extensive patronage, has found it necessary to make many new arrangements and additional improvements in the several departments, all of which tend to class this establishment with the most complete in the Union, possessing such facilities and advan- tages as enable the proprietor to turn out specimens of the Daguerrean Art, which are pronounced by competent judges superior to any pro- duced.

By the addition of Mammoth Camera Apparatus and powerful Lenses, of an improved construction, lately imported from Germany and Frunce, at considerable cost, the proprietor is also enabled to introduce Potographic Portraits of the largest size and of as unique finish as have ever been taken. The style of these Portraits cannot fail to induce a decided demand, and for family Groups must be greatly admired.

In the Chemical Department, many important improvements have been developed, which greatly facilitate the " Sittings, and give an exquisite tone and finish to the Picture.

The Photographic arrangements are such, too, as obviate the heretofore unpleasant methods of sitting; for, by the combina- tion of large Graduating Sky and Side Lights, a most complete artistic effect of beautifully blended lights and shadow is the result ; thereby doing away entirely with the ghostly hues, distorted visages, and murky impression ordinarily taken, and giving instead roundness of figure, bold relief, and general life-like appearance, which constitute the qualities of perfect Daguerreotypes.

The repeated failures and inconveniences heretofore materially affert- ing the taking of Children's Miniatures, are now entirely overcome. Such can now be produced in perfection in a second or two of time.

Portraits and Mmiatures finished in a variety of styles, and every effort made to please. The public are solicited to visit the " Plumbe Gallery," and inspect the numerous beautiful specimens of the art.

B. P. PAIGE.

PRESSED AND HAND BRICK.

The undersigned have on hand a large and good assortment of all kinds of BRICK, and the best quality of Front Brick.
