All models of the L. C. Smith & Bros. typewriter are manufactured with either right or left hand carriage return, to suit the operator. While the right hand carriage return is the standard for the L. C. Smith & Bros. typewriter, its manu- facturers realize that many operators have learned on a left hand machine.
To do away with the necessity of changing their operating habits in this respect, both styles are made.

INTRODUCTION
Herewith is presented to patrons the 1922 edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Directory of the District of Columbia. It is the result of a careful enumeration of the citizens and business inter- ests of the Ditrict and an assemblage of every item of data perti- nent to it, all of which have had the advantage of efficient com- pilation by a corps of experienced men. The work has also had the benefit of the complete and efficient organization of the pub- lishers whose imprint is a guarantee that the volume presents a modern, up-to-date and reliable Directory, fully measuring up to the standard attained in previous editions which have met the requirements of, and proven so satisfactory to, patrons and the public.
The several features of the Directory which have given such satisfaction to patrons in former issues have been retained, while several have been amplified and improved, as suggested by experi- ence. The statistical review is especially noteworthy.
The Directory contains five essential departments as follows:
The MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, pages 13 to 57, in- clude a variety of miscellaneous information such as the Federal and District Governments, with their various departments and bureas, Diplomatic Corps, Banks and Trust Companies, Building and Business Associations, Cemeteries, Churches, Congressional Directory, Courts, Dispensaries, Homes, Hospitals and Asylums, Labor Organizations, Libraries, Newspapers, Parks, Schools, Secret and Benevolent Societies and Organizations, etc.
The BUYERS' GUIDE. This features occupies pages 101 to 224. In the Guide will be found classified according to lines of business and professions attractive display advertisements and buiness cards of those engaged in various industries and profes- sions. "The Directory is the Common Intermediary between Buyer and Seller." If those making use of the information con- tained in the Buyers' Guide would only state the source of their information every business man in the city would soon come to a realization of the importance of business or that of his company not only having proper representation in the Buyers' Guide, but also of being properly registered under all headings covering his lines of business in the Classified Business Directory.
The ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of citizens, business firms and corporations is embraced in pages 227 to 1684.
The STREET GUIDE AND DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLD- ERS is included in pages 1685 to 2049.
The CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is contained in pages 2051 to 2195.
The Index to Contents and Index to Advertisements will be found on pages 9 to 12.
