SLAUGHTER, on the Delaware & Chesa- peake railroad, is twelve miles west of Dover, and about a mile from the Maryland bound- ary. It has about 300 inhabitants. This vil- lage is situated in the midst of a district fertile in grain. The Delaware & Chesapeake R. R. connects at Oxford with the steamboat line to Baltimore, and at Clayton with the Dela- ware R. R. for the north. There is a good public school about half a mile distant.

SMYRNA, one of the largest towns in Kent county, is in the northwestern part of Duck Creek hundred, seven miles from Dela- ware Bay, and twelve miles from Dover. It is not directly on the main line of the Dela- ware railroad, but is connected with Clayton, by a branch road, three-quarters of a mile in length. Smyrna has direct water communi- cations with Philadelphia, from her own port on Smyrna river, a line of propellers, carry- ing freight and passengers, making daily trips in the summer season. The country is level and mostly cleared; the soil sandy, very pro- duetive, especially for peaches and small fruits. Peaches, grapes, small fruits, grain, hay, etc., principal crops. The town has two foundries and machine shops, basket factories, three canneries and two carriage works. But the most important industry is the manufactury of phosphates, for which three are four establishments. The city has water works, an electric plant valued at $10,- 000, making it the best lighted town below Wilmington, and a sewerage system; also two national banks, National Bank of Smyrna and the Fruit Growers' National. A weekly newspaper, the Smyrna Times, is issued Wed- nesday.


The churches are-Asbury M. E .; St. Peter's P. E .; Presbyterian; Catholic; Cen- tennial M. E. (African); A. M. E. Secret societies are well represented by lodges of Masons, T. O. O. F., I. O. G. T., Heptasophs, K. G. E., and A. O. U. W. Population is nearly 3200.

THOMPSONVILLE, eight miles from Milford, and about three from the Bay, is a promising place in the midst of a fine agricul- tural region, in which cereals and garden vegetables abound. It has a M. E. church and two public schools.

VERNON, a prosperous village of over 150 inhabitants, is situated near the center of Mispillion hundred, and has a railroad station at llarrington, five miles distant. The sur- rounding region is a gently rolling country, fertile in cereals and fruit, especially peaches. A public school is about a mile from the town; there is also a M. E. church.
