HISTORY of Knox Presbyterian Church
O N NOVEMBER 24th, 1902, Mr. C. V. Thompson was appointed by the First Church, Pensacola, Florida, to confer with C. F. Zeek, George W. Johnston and A. D. Morrison in reference to locating a Mission Sabbath School in the North-eastern part of the city, on what was known then as Stod- dard Avenue now 12th Avenue. On January 4th, 1903, the first service was held in a little storeroom. The day was bright and balmy enough for open doors and windows. About seventy persons were present and the work was begun under most favorable auspices. The first rally day after organization showed an average attendance of 51. In 1904 the largest attendance was 110 but when yellow fever broke out in the city the attendance was reduced to 60. The year 1907 was one of greatest discouragement. The attendance

was very irregular and in general very small, so much so that at times the most faithful workers felt the strain of unappreciated efforts. The school continued to make pro- gress and by the generosity of one man it was enabled to secure a permanent home and grow into a church. Mr. William Fisher, Sr., Elder in the First Church provided in his will that $2,500.00 should be given to this enter- prise provided a similar amount was given by members of the church and others, to se- cure grounds and erect a building. These
sums were increased by a fortunate invest- ment in lots which were afterwards sold at a profit of $1,200.00 making in all $6,200.00 which was used in the purchase of five lots in New City and in the erection of the present church edifice, thus enabling the new Church to begin its work entirely free from debt.
The Organization of the New Church
A Commission of Florida Presbytery met in the Church building at 7:30 p. m., January

was organized January 8th, 1911, with 59 Charter Members and in one year from date this membership had grown by the addition of 45 new members making 104 members by the close of the first year.
The Building of the Manse
The new Church was scarcely six months old when it determined to secure a home for its Pastor. On July 11th, 1911, plans were accepted and a loan determined upon. On January 8th, 1912, the manse was reported completed at a cost of $3,260.14. The build- ing Committee consisted of W. F. Breen, C. J. Oerting and J. M. Gillis. Mr. Breen super- intended the building of the manse. This building on lot adjoining the church could not be reproduced for less than $10,000.00. And whilst others did well in raising funds for its erection, the Dorcas Society deserves credit for their unfailing interest and abund- ant self-denial. The manse is practically free from debt.

New Officers Elected Since Organization
Mr. E. B. Calhoun was elected Deacon, May 12th, 1914.
On December 2nd, 1917, Mr. A. S. Johnson who had formerly served as an Elder in the Second Presbyterian Church, Birmingham, was added to our Eldership. In June, 1918, Mr. John R. Lewis and Henry T. Wicke were added to the deaconate. In September, 1919, Mr. Don Mclellan was elected Elder and Mr. C. F. Steward, Clinton Tompkins and A. F. Wicke were elected Deacons.
Since the organization of the Church we have lost by death Mr. George W. Johnston one of the original Elders and the first Clerk of Session. Mr. Johnston was very active in labors and generous with his gifts when this new Church most needed help. Mr. James McLean Gillis has passed from us. He was one of the first Deacons of the Church and was beloved by his brethren, faithful and efficient as Treasurer of the Church from its

organization until his death. Mr. Henry T. Wicke was removed by death when he had served as a Deacon for less than one year. But he had served long enough to give promise of great usefulness in the Church. And in the past year (1920) the Church has sustained an unusual loss in the death of Mr. C. F. Zeek, one of the three original Elders. He filled more responsible positions than any man in our church. He was Clerk of Session since May, 1915, Treasurer of the Knox Church, Treasurer of the Presbytery of Flor- ida for twenty years or more and superin- tendent of the Sabbath School from its or- ganization in 1903 until his death in 1920.

This recommendation was approved by the congregation at a meeting held Septem- ber 26th, 1920, and the following were chosen members of the Building Committee: A. S. Johnson, A. D. Morrison, C. L. Tompkins, A.
