INTRODUCTION
R. L. POLK & CO., publishers of the Clearwater City Directory, as well as more than 750 other city, county, state and national directories, present to subscribers and the general public, this, the 1931 edition of the Clearwater Directory, which also includes Tarpon Springs, Dunedin and Largo.
Confidence in the growth of Clearwater's industry, population and wealth, and in the advancement of its civic and social activities, will be created as sections of this directory are consulted, for the directory is a mirror truly reflecting Clearwater to the world.
The enviable position occupied by R. L. POLK & CO.'S directories in the estimation of the public throughout the country, has been established by rendering the best in directory service. With an unrivaled organization, and hav- ing the courteous and hearty cooperation of the business and professional men and residents, the publishers feel that the result of their labors will meet with the approval of every user, and that the Clearwater Directory will fulfill its mis- sion as a source of authentic information pertaining to the community.
Five Major Departments
The several essential departments are arranged in the following order :-
THE MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, pages 15 to 18, presents a variety of information, such as lists of city and county officials; court and post office directories; statistical review; trade and civic surveys, etc.
THE BUYERS' GUIDE, pages 25 to 40, printed on tinted paper, contains the advertisements of leading business and professional interests of Clearwater, Dunedin and Largo. These pages will be found particularly interesting and in- structive to substantial purchasing factors. The advertise- ments have been carefully grouped by departments and are indexed under headings descriptive of the business repre- sented. This is reference advertising at its best, and, as such, merits a survey by all buyers eager to familiarize themselves with sources of supply. The community's activities, in many interesting phases, are authentically pictured. In an ambitious and progressive community like Clearwater and vicinity, the necessity of having this kind of information immediately available, is very great, and fre- quently, pressing. General appreciation of this fact is evidenced by the liberal support the city directory enjoys in the many fields which it serves. A similar guide for Tarpon Springs appears in pages 209 to 212.
THE ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of residents, business firms and corporations of Clearwater is included in pages 41 to 160. A feature of this section is the inclusion of the wife's name in parentheses following that of the hus-

INTRODUCTION
band. A similar list for Tarpon Springs is contained in pages 213 to 251; for Dunedin, in pages 257 to 278, and for Largo, in pages 279 to 294.
THE DIRECTORY OF HOUSEHOLDERS, INCLUDING STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE, for Clearwater, covers pages 161 to 198. In this section the names of the streets and avenues are arranged in alphabetical order; the residences and business houses are arranged numerically under the name of each street and avenue, and the names of house- holders and business concerns are placed opposite the numbers.
THE CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY is included in pages 295 to 356. This department lists the various manu- facturing, mercantile and professional interests of the whole community in alphabetical order under appropriate head- ings. This feature constitutes an invaluable and indispen- sable epitome of the business interests of the community. "The Directory is the common intermediary between Buyer and Seller.". As such it plays no small part in the daily doings of the business world. "More goods are bought and sold through the Classified Business Directory than through any other medium."
Community Publicity
The directory reflects the achievements and ambitions of the community, depicting in truthful terms what it has to offer as a place of residence, as a business location, as an industrial site and as an educational center. To broadcast this information, the publishers have placed copies of this issue of the directory in Directory Libraries, where they are readily available for free public reference, and serve as perpetual and reliable advertisements of Clearwater, Tarpon Springs, Dunedin and Largo, for business men, everywhere, realize that the city directory represents a community as it really is.
The Clearwater Directory Library
Through the courtesy of the publishers of the Clear- water City Directory, a Directory Library is maintained in the offices of the Clearwater Chamber of Commerce, for free reference by the general public. This is one of more than 500 Directory Libraries installed in the chief cities of the U. S. and Canada by members of the Association of North American Directory Publishers, under whose super- vision the system is operated.
The publishers appreciatively acknowledge the recogni- tion by those progressive business and professional men who have demonstrated their confidence in the city directory as an advertising medium, with assurance that it will bring a commensurate return.

CLEARWATER
THE BEAUTIFUL JUDICIAL SEAT OF "PEERLESS PINELLAS" "It's Springtime All the Time in Clearwater"
Clearwater is the judicial seat of Pinellas County, in which are located St. Petersburg of tourist fame, Belleair, of golf fame, Tarpon Springs, the largest sponge market in the world and the only sponge exchange in the United States, Crystal Beach, Dunedin, Indian Rocks, Largo, Ozona, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, Tampa Shores, Wall Springs and New Port Richey, all progressive, beautiful and attrac- tive communities which are growing marvelously.
A network of fine paved highways connects all of these places. Clearwater is 18 miles north of St.Petersburg, Tampa is 30 miles east and Jacksonville 212 north, all con- nected with Clearwater by paved highways. Clearwater is a truly progressive, year-round residence and business city and one of the most popular tourist cities in the state. Here the ocean breezes have an unobstructed sweep over the mainland, furnishing a pleasant obligato to life, both by night and by day.
Two main trunk lines, the Seaboard Air Line and the Atlantic Coast Line, provide through train and Pullman accommodations from all points in the North, East and West, without change or other inconveniences. The "Suwanee River Special," on the Seaboard, and the "Pinellas Special," on the Atlantic Coast Line, are popular, well-known solid Pullman trains operated directly to Clear- water from Chicago, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Boston, New York and all intermediate points, without change-from the icy North to the Land of Sunshine without leaving one's car.
An up-to-date system of large passenger buses makes its headquarters at Clearwater, operating to and from Tampa, St. Petersburg, Tarpon Springs, Belleair, Lakeland, Orlando and on across the state to all points on the Florida East Coast.
Clearwater is a city of many streets and of considerable space. The reason for this is that nearly all homes are surrounded by spacious grounds or by remnants of orange groves, memories of a past when Florida was not yet invaded by the railroads, or discovered by the winter tourist.
It is a most striking contrast that meets one's eye when he turns from the business streets of the town to the resi- dential sections. While the former present an uninterrupted scene of busy pedestrians crowding the sidewalks, and auto- mobiles en masse by the curbs, or gliding over the asphalt, the latter are smothered in foliage and flowers. Most im- pressive are the magnificent, gnarled old oaks covered with Spanish moss, and the stately palms with fern-like heads, and on every turn one is confronted with a burst of color, ever-changing and wonderful to behold.
Clearwater's beautiful Tourist Park is located on the highest elevation of the Florida coast, overlooking the Gulf

INTRODUCTION
of Mexico, and has been truthfully called "The Tourist's Paradise." Almost every form of outdoor recreation is available-roque, lawn-bowling, horseshoes, tennis, shuffle- board, rokay, checkers, chess, etc. Then there are swings and slides for the children and an abundance of shady seats for relaxation and rest. The Community House, with spa- cious porch, is unusually attractive and comfortable and most appealing to the ladies.
Clearwater is the home of Radio Broadcasting Station WFLA. The local broadcasting station was established in 1925 and operated on a strictly non-commercial basis as a citizen service and city advertiser for several years. During 1928 consolidation with municipal interests in St. Petersburg fo med the present unit of WFLA and WSUN. These sta- tions since inception have carried the best of local programs at all periods of the year. WFLA-WSUN now operates on a full 17-hour schedule from 7:30 A. M. to midnight daily and 12 hours on Sundays. WFLA-WSUN is the Florida West Coast outlet for the National Broadcasting Company, and carries many of the NBC famous programs from New York and Chicago studios. WFLA is licensed under the name of the Clearwater Chamber of Commerce, and main- tains business offices therein. WFLA maintains studios at the Clearwater Community House in the City Park and at the Hillsboro Hotel in Tampa. Since 1930 WFLA has functioned in a commercial field as the key station of the Florida West Coast Broadcasting Company, Inc., handling all commercial programs and networks.
In the semi-tropical waters of Clearwater Bay and the Gulf of Mexico are found in abundance, not only the won- derfully game silver tarpon, ranging in weight from 50 to 200 pounds, and the equally game kingfish, but the sea bass, weighing from 50 to 600 pounds, the grouper, sea trout, snapper, channel bass, deep-sea bass, devil-fish and jewfish and the delicately-flavored pompano and Spanish mackerel. Fresh-water streams and lakes of awe-inspiring beauty abound in many varieties of fish, principal among which is the big-mouth bass. To fish in the bay and gulf and in the fresh-water streams and lakes is a distinct delight to Clear- water's throng of winter visitors. It is not merely a pastime, but a thrilling sport in every sense of the word.
Five splendid 18-hole golf courses are located within a three-mile radius of Clearwater. The 18-hole course of the Clearwater Country Club is one of the sportiest in the country, and moderate fees are charged tourists, who are finding this course more popular each season. A magnificent clubhouse, with artistic furnishings, and commodious show- ers and locker rooms for both ladies and gentlemen, is available to visiting golfers. The grass greens are commo- dious and scientifically designed and located. The fairways, just narrow enough to be interesting, stretch over rolling territory and natural hazards. It is a Herbert Strong layout. The two 18-hole courses at the Belleview-Biltmore Hotel, constructed under the direction of Donald J. Ross, have been famous for years and are the scenes each winter of the West Coast Open Championship for the Plant Trophy, attracting the leading golfers of the country. Adjoining the city limits on the north is the splendid Dunedin Isles Course and to the south is the Pelican Country Club course in Bel- leair.

INTRODUCTION
Clearwater Bay is a land-locked harbor at the foot of the highest elevation of any Florida coast resort. The City Tourist Park and many imposing homes overlook this beautiful body of water, beyond which, separated by the keys, lies the Gulf of Mexico stretching to the distant horizon.
Clearwater Beach is second to none in the country, and surf-bathing is enjoyed at this most popular watering place every month in the year. This gracefully-curving coast line and gradually-sloping beach forms the gulf side of the keys separating Clearwater Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, and it is but a five-minutes' drive from the heart of the city over a modern traffic bridge. A dip in the salt waters of the Gulf is a real tonic-pleasant and healthful. The balmy breezes from the Gulf make life more enjoy- able-winter and summer. Considering the geographical location of Florida, it is of interest to note that the aver- age distance of Florida is more than 400 miles south of the southern boundary of California, and that Naples, Italy, in latitude 41, is 640 miles north of the northern boundary of Florida.
Clearwater Bay and the adjacent Gulf are the scenes of all popular forms of water sport, particularly yacht and motor-boat races.
Many interesting meets are held under the auspices of the Clearwater Yacht Club, and aspirant seekers of elaborate trophies should enter these events, particularly the annual mid-winter regatta.
No more enticing picture can be offered than the flying spray of a speed craft, battling for honors, witnessed under excellent weather conditions in mid-winter. To realize this scene, one must come to Clearwater.
Various beautiful shades of green and blue coat the waters of the Bay and Gulf during the continuous days of sunshine through the winter months.
A view of the Bay and Gulf may also be had from the business section and from practically every hotel in Clear- water. The main highway leading from Tampa to St. Petersburg is located within. sight of these delightfully at- tractive sea expanses, on its way through Clearwater.
If the sun shines in Florida, it shines in Clearwater and on Clearwater Bay.
Clearwater's seven packing houses ship strawberries, figs, grapes, guavas, kumquats, limes, lemons and all var- ieties of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers, potatoes, peas, beans, lettuce, corn, sugar beets, cabbage and many other varieties are grown profitably the year 'round in the fertile soil of Pinellas County.
Clearwater and Pinellas County have led for years in the production of grapefruit, and the finest groves in the land are located just outside the city limits. Up-to-date fruit packing houses, where the fruit is prepared and packed for shipment, do a thriving business in Clearwater, and there are twenty within motor-truck hauling distance. Over a million boxes of grapefruit and oranges are shipped out of Pinellas County each year, which bring into the country approximately four millions of dollars.
