TARPON SPRINGS

"THE VENICE OF THE SOUTH" At the North End of, and the Gateway to, Peerless Pinellas County, the Winter Playground of the Florida Gulf Coast

Tarpon Springs is a city with an all-year population of 3,414, according to the 1930 U. S. Census, with an equal number in the nearby communities which form its trade territory. This population more than doubles during the eight months of Fall, Winter and Spring, when the people of the North come to the land of sunshine to escape the cold.

Tarpon Springs enjoys an enviable location, midway on the Florida coast of the Gulf of Mexico, which forms the city's west border. On the north the city is bounded by the Anclote River, and on the east by Lake Butler, one of Florida's largest lakes. Large bayous extending well up into the city gave Tarpon Springs years ago the sobriquet of "The Venice of the South."

Tarpon Springs possesses all of the pleasing features and health-giving qualities of other Florida West Coast winter resorts and, in addition, has much Old World charm peculiarly its own. It is within a few minutes' motor trip of all the state's points of interest and the famous beaches of the incomparable Gulf Coast.

Tarpon Springs has many churches, these denomina- tions having places of worship here: Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, Presbyterian, Episcopal, Universalist, Greek Or- thodox, Christian Science and Church of God.

The Tarpon Springs Public Library has several thousand volumes, is in charge of a competent librarian, and has a very low membership fee.

Tarpon Springs has looked well after that most im- portant thing-its water supply. Water of unlimited quan- tity is furnished consumers through mains which reach every part of the city. The water is pumped from Lake Butler, is chlorinated, aeriated and filtered before being pumped into the mains. The city enjoys good electrical ser- vice at very moderate rates.

Entertainment Features

Tarpon Springs has two 18-hole golf courses within its corporate limits. The Municipal Course, a rolling, sporty, all-grass-green course, enjoys a reputation among golfers of the Florida West Coast as being second to none. Its one- dollar greens fee brings crowds daily from nearby cities. The Sunset Hills Course was added a few years ago, and is rapidly becoming popular. In addition, the city has the usual miniature courses.

Municipal tennis, shuffleboard and croquet courts are available.

There is a tourist club, with several hundred members, with its own clubhouse, and with weekly card parties, enter- tainments and classes, where the newcomer rapidly becomes acquainted with winter visitors from other states.

TARPON SPRINGS INTRODUCTION

Tarpon Springs, for so small a city, has many industries in the city proper and in its trade territory. There are five citrus fruit packing houses, a grapefruit canning plant, sev- eral shipyards and ways, a toy works, a golf club factory, a custom chicken hatchery, an ice plant, five wholesale fish companies, 16 sponge packing houses, a bottling works, sheet metal works, and the other industries usually found in a small city.

Here it might be added that Tarpon Springs schools, housed in up-to-date buildings with up-to-date equipment, are accredited and will be found equal to schools in any other part of the country. Children of winter visitors study together with the children of residents.

Tarpon Springs lies on the Gulf of Mexico. From the other three directions radiate roads unsurpassed in any section or state. They are well paved and, with the state speed limit of 45 miles an hour, provide excellent facilities for motoring to other places of interest in the state.

Short motor rides over these incomparable roads take winter visitors to any of the famous beaches of the Gulf Coast; to the famous Gandy Bridge, longest in the world; to the Bok Memorial Singing Tower at Lake Wales; to the wonderful Silver Springs and under-water caverns of Ocala; to the entertaining winter quarters of the world's greatest circuses at Sarasota. 1

Distances from Tarpon Springs are: St. Petersburg, 34; Gandy Bridge, 25; Clearwater, 14; Tampa, 28; Lake Wales, 96; Sarasota, 86; Ocala, 105; Gainesville, 152; Jacksonville, 215.

Tarpon Springs has twenty miles of water frontage within its corporate limits, picturesque bayous which empty their waters into the beautiful, winding Anclote River, and thence on to the majestic Gulf of Mexico, reaching into the very center of the city. Around these bayous are the homes of many northern people who spend their winters here in the health-giving sunshine which has made this section famous and more popular each year.

Tarpon Springs has good hotels, moderate in price, as well as a large number of good rooming and apartment houses. The Chamber of Commerce can help one find just what he wants at a price that will please. The hotels are the Sunset Hills, Arcade, Villa Plumosa, Stratford, Homelyke, Topliff, and a number of smaller ones.

Points of Interest

Tarpon Beach and Municipal Pier.

The Sponge Exchange and its exotic coffee and curio shops.

A launch trip to the headwaters of the Anclote River, where live alligators may be seen in their native jungle glory.

The internationally famous collection of paintings by George Inness, Jr., with his last bid for world peace, "The Only Hope," a painting exhibited all over the United States.

Fishing trips to the Gulf of Mexico, where many vari- eties of deep sea fish may be caught, including the gamest of them all, the silver king tarpon.

TARPON SPRINGS INTRODUCTION

Pinellas County

Just a word about Peerless Pinellas County, of which Tarpon Springs is a part. Pinellas is 66th in size of the 67 counties of Florida, but with its year-round population of more than sixty thousand, is the most densely populated county in the state, It is the most cosmopolitan county, for here we find natives of every one of the 48 states of the Union, of the 11 provinces of the Dominion of Canada, and of all the leading countries of the world. Pinellas County ships more citrus fruit to area than any other Florida county, and in spite of its small size, is second in the state in the production of the various citrus fruits, and leads the world in quality of its grapefruit. Around Tarpon Springs are thousands of acres of the most fertile land, best suited to grapefruit culture, which can be obtained at a low price, awaiting the plough and the planting of trees.

The Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce

The Tarpon Springs Chamber of Commerce is a live organization which has had much to do with the progress of the city and is responsible for many of its more modern tendencies. It is representative of the commercial, pro- fessional and manufacturing interests of the city and had its inception in a desire to promote their growth in home- building, in manufacturing industries, in civic improve- ment and in commercial importance.
