PREFACE

In presenting this, the eighteenth annual edition of the Jacksonville City Directory, the publishers feel confident that they are giving to the city of Jack- sonville the most complete and accurate Directory ever issued.

The department of miscellaneous information beginning at page 33 is a com- plete and comprehensive guide to the State, County and City governments, Churches, Public and Private Schools, Banks, Courts, Hospitals and Asylums, Clubs, Benevolent, Literary and other associations, Labor Unions, Secret Socie- ties, etc. This is followed by the Street Directory or Householders' Guide, pages 53 to 133, which consists of the name and description of each street and avenue in alphabetical order, the numbers on each street also being shown to- gether with the names of the occupants of each building and at what number the intersecting streets cross. By the use of this department the exact location of any house or building in the city can be immediately and exactly ascertained.

The Alphabetical List of Names commencing at page 135,, contians the names of all busines firms and corporations and the inhabitants of the city over a cer- tain age, together with the occupation and residence address of each individual.

The Classified Business Directory, "The Buyer's Guide," beginning at page 1045, is a complete exhibit of the commercial, manufacturing, professional, financial and other business interests of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under their respective headings.

Population.

The customary means of estimating the population of a city, is to multiply the number of names in the City Directory by 2 1-2 to allow for the names of women and children not included in the Alphabetical List of Names. In the present volume there are 41,249 names. By use of the above multiple, a pop- ulation of 103,120 is indicated for Jacksonville and contiguous territory, an in- crease of 8,655 over the directory estimate of 1916.

According to the estimate of the Federal Bureau of Census of January first, Jacksonville is credited with a population of 76,101. However it should be re- membered that this is a census of the inhabitants residing within the city limits. The City Directory recognizes no municipal boundaries and the names contained therein is the result of a canvass embracing not only the city proper, but all sur- rounding territory and suburbs, the residents of which, while not strictly speak- ing being citizens of Jacksonville, they are so closely identified with the city and its life, as to make their inclusion in a directory of the city a necessity.

When the next National, State or other census is made of Jacksonville after the extension of the city limits according to the ordinance just passed by the city council, the publishers are confident that their estimate will not be found to be excessive.

In conclusion, we desire to acknowledge the support accorded the work and to extend the promise of every effort to fill the field in the future as in the past.

Respectfully,

R. L. POLK & CO., Publishers.
