PREFACE

No town on Florida's west coast has a more attractive setting than Sarasota and none has so many natural advantages to commend it for a tourist resort. Its location on a crescent-shaped bay, more beautiful than Naples, offers safe harbor for boats and fishing craft and is only two miles from where the blue waters of Mexico's Gulf break upon the white beaches of the verdant, out- lying keys. In the bay, at the pass or out in the gulf no better fishing waters can be found in the State, whether one wishes to drop a line for the perch or grunts, fish for the wily Kings, troll for the redfish, go out of sight of land for the grouper or match strength and skill with the silver tarpon; and among the wealth of sea foods are found the oyster, the clam and the stone crab.

Sarasota is high and dry, no healthier place can be found in Florida. The refreshing gulf breezes temper the summer's warmest days and the nights are always delightfully cool and pleasant.

One mile of seawall is built along the bay front with a wide boulevard, beautifully parked. There are 8 miles of concrete asphaltic and brick paved streets and 14 miles of sidewalks within the city limits. Sarasota owns its own water works and its electric light plant, it has a high school, employing thir- teen teachers, seven denominations are represented in its churches, eleven secret orders are among its organizations, a progressive Woman's Club is a factor in the social and civic life of the city, and two newspapers tell of its resources and advantages. In addition to these it has several hotels and all the business houses that a population of 2,800 demand.

Sarasota has two daily trains from Tampa which is 70 miles north. The district is now putting down roads from a $250,000 bond issue and a movement is being considered to build a golf course, costing $25,000 and a recreation pier at a cost of $18,000.

Sarasota is the coming city of the West Coast.
