PREFACE
"Beautiful Manatee" and "The Land of Manatee" are terms specifically applicable to this little city and its immed- iate surroundings. Here will be found all that is expressed or implied in these familiar designations as pertaining to delightful climate, fertile vegetable lands, abundant fruit production, healthful and attractive homes, enjoyable boat- ing and fishing opportunities, and convenient transportation facilities.
In the important matters of schools, churches, stores, hotels, local newspaper, bank and professional services, Manatee is prepared to meet the needs of all its residents, permanent or temporary. The number of its permanent res- idents and of winter visitors is steadily increasing from year to year. A large proportion of attractive homes are owned and occupied by families who have recently come from the North. At the same time many of i'ts most estimable and progressive citizens are of old Florida families dating back to the very earliest settlements in the state. The available. rooms for winter visitors, while increasing in number from year to year, has never, of late, been sufficient to meet the growing demand. The city offers to homeseeker, to tourist, to agriculturist, to investor, attractions that are well worth looking into. Northern capital can here be profitably in- vested in grove or trucking lands, or in the erection of mod- erate priced homes or of rooming houses for the growing population.
The present town has 1,500 population. Under a new charter it is incorporated as a city with virtually a commis- sion form of government. Its main streets are paved with brick with granite curbing. The city has a modern and complete sanitary sewer system, and a water system fur- nishing probably the best water in the State. The surround- ing agricultural land cannot be excelled in Florida for fruit or vegetable growing or for general farming. It is certain that Manatee, attractive and beautiful already, will make notable progress in the next few years.
