PREFACE
T HE canvass for the information contained in this issue of the Jacksonville City Directory has been as com- plete as it is possible to make it and covers all the territory included within the limits of "Greater Jacksonville." It has been the aim of the present publishers to keep the standard of the Jacksonville Directory up to the highest point of excellence both in the character of the information given and accuracy in its preparation. Having at our command unlimited resources and facilities enables us to produce a work reaching a higher degree of accuracy than it would be possible to obtain by publishers not specially equipped for this peculiar work.
Location.
Jacksonville is located on the St. Johns river in Duval County, Florida. The city is seventeen miles from the At- lantic ocean, has an area of seven and one-half miles. It has seven miles of water front with a depth of twenty-four feet in channel, sufficient to accommodate large ocean steamers. It is a basing-point for making freight rates. It is the me- tropolis of Florida and the gateway to Florida and the West Indies, and is in direct connection with all the prin- cipal points in the United States.
Streets.
The city has 135 miles of streets, 52 miles of which are paved with brick, shell and macadam. The paving has cost the city $1,000,000 and the result is that Jacksonville pre- sents a most agreeable appearance of solidity. The street department is well organized.
Electric Light Plant.
This city owns one of the most comprehensive electric light plants in the South. It is equipped with every modern device known to the manufacture of electric light and the rates in vogue in Jacksonville are the cheapest in the world. We know of cities that have the advantage of power gen- erated by waterfalls and dams whose rates are 12 and 14c
21
per K. W. hour, while the rate in Jacksonville is seven cents per K. W. hour, and all night arcs only cost $7.50 per month.
Street-car System.
The Jacksonville Electric Company operates 34 miles of track and its cars are run to all parts of the city, a single fare and universal transfer system being in use.
Public Library.
Jacksonville has one of the finest public libraries in the South. The building is centrally located and cost $65,000. The library is supported by city taxation and now contains 14,000 volumes. For the first year the circulation was 95,000, and has steadily increased.
Transportation Facilities.
The transportation facilities of Jacksonville are among the best enjoyed by any city on the continent. River, ocean and rail furnish an inlet and outlet complete in all their details with a service that positively has no peer. The Clyde line operates a line of freight and passenger steamers to New York, the Beach & Miller line and Independent line operate on the inland streams. Then there is the naval stores line of steamers and the Southern Steamship Com- pany, in addition to the many tramp craft that ply in the Jacksonville trade.
Population.
There are contained in this volume 26,608 names, an in- crease over the previous issue of 1,091 names. Estimating the population upon the basis of the multiple of 212. the population of Jacksonville is shown to be 66,520.
