PREFACE
The publishers herewith present the twentieth annual issue of the Jack- sonville City Directory, with the assurance that no pains nor expense have been spared to produce a work which in respect of completeness and accuracy, can- not be improved upon. The scope of the present volume has been increased to meet the growth of the city and as rapidly as the outlying portions and vari- ous additions to the city are built up and populated, the territory covered by the City Directory is increased to meet the requirements. The Street Guide or Directory of Householders has been improved and enlarged and shows a gain of thirty pages over the last issue.
The department of miscellaneous information beginning at page 73 is a complete and comprehensive guide to the State, County and City governments, Churches, Public and Private Schools, Banks, Courts, Hospitals and Asylums, Clubs, Benevolent, Literary and other associations, Labor Unions, Secret So- cieties, etc. This is followed by the Street Directory or Householders' Guide, pages 93 to 202, which consists of the name and description of each street and avenue in alphabetical order, the numbers on each street also being shown to- gether with the names of the occupants of each building and at what number the intersecting streets cross. By the use of this department the exact location of any house or building in the city can be immediately and exactly ascer- tained.
The Alphabetical List of Names commencing at page 203, contains the names of all business firms and corporations and the inhabitants of the city over a certain age, together with the occupation and residence address of each individual.
The Classified Business Directory, the concluding department, is a complete exhibit of the commercial, manufacturing, professional, financial and other busi- ness interests of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under their respective headings.
POPULATION
The customary means of estimating the population of a city, is to multi- ply the number of names in the City Directory by 21/2 to allow for the names of women and children not included in the Alphabetical List of Names. In the present volume there are 48,745 names. By use of the above multiple, a pop- ulation of 121,863 is indicated for Jacksonville and contiguous territory. In comparing this estimate with estimates made from other sources, it should be born in mind that the territory embraced in the directory canvass is not con- fined to the city limits, but is extended to include the immediate suburbs, the inhabitants of which are so closely identified with the city that a directory which did not include South Jacksonville, Ortega, and the various additions to the city on the north and west, would not be complete.
In conclusion, the publishers desire to extend their grateful appreciation to the patrons of the work for their support and the public in general for their co-operation in furnishing the desired information, both of which are necessary to assure a modern directory for a modern city.
Respectfully,
R. L. POLK & CO., Publishers.
