The Alphabetical List of Names commencing at page 220, contains the names of all business firms and corporations, and the inhabitants of the city over a certain age, together with the occupation and address of each individual. The Classified Business Directory, beginning at page 1275, is a complete exhibit of the commercial, manufacturing, professional, financial and other business inter- ests of the city, arranged in alphabetical order under their respective headings.
The canvass of the current edition as heretofore, has been extended to cover South Jacksonville, Panama, Ortega, Murray Hill, Brentwood. and other outly- ing territory, the residents of which are so closely identified with the city as to make their inclusion in the city directory a necessity.
Population.
The basis upon which the population of a city is calculated, from the num- ber of names contained in the city directory, has been established by directory publishers after a thorough investigation of the facts, and it is not offered to the public on authentic calculation. In comparing the estimated population of Jacksonville with the population as given by 1920 U. S. census, the following facts must be considered: The U. S. census enumeration is confined strictly to within the incorporate limits of the city, while the directory canvass is not confined to the incorporate limits, but embraces all the contiguous resident ter- mitory surrounding the city, that is as important and necessary part of a di- rectory as the incorporate territory.
The number of names contained in this issue of the Jacksonville Directory is 48,744. The population of the territory embraced in the directory, upon a calculation on a basis of 21/2 to the name, the directory populaltion of Jackson- ville is 121,862.
Respectfully, R. L. POLK & CO., Publishers.
