INTRODUCTORY.
In presenting herewith the second volume of SHOLES' AT- LANTA CITY DIRECTORY, the publisher would simply state that every effort has been put forth to make it absolutely correct and complete in every particular.
A desire, on the part of many, to evade a certain tax im_ posed by the city government, has been the occasion of much inconvenience to the canvassers for the Directory, but those who declined giving names for this reason, will in every instance, it is believed, find them in the proper place, generally with the addenda of Refused Information.
To the general matter heretofore embodied has been added this year a Southern Post and Money Order Office Directory and a newly revised map of the city, both of which will be found of much convenience.
The publisher extends his heartiest thanks to the patrons of his work for their encouragement, and regrets the fact that so large a number, comparatively, of the business men of Atlanta prefer to borrow the Directory of their neighbor rather than purchase for themselves.
With the hope that this evil, as well as that of refusing name-, may be remedied as the years go by, and with the promise that it shall be his earnest endeavor to make cach succeeding issue of the Atlanta Directory more worthy of commendation and support, the publisher signs himself,
Very respectfully,
A. E. SHOLES.

GUIDE To Streets and Avenues in Atlanta and Suburbs,
EXPLANATIONS.
Reference to the "Guide" will show the streets, avenues, etc., in alpha- betical order, with the intersecting streets added, and, so far as practicable, corner numbers are given, so if one wisnes to find, say No. 41 Whitehall, it will be seen that No. 21 is at corner of Alabama, and No. 63 corner of Hunter ; hence, the number sought is between those streets. Many corners are desti- tute of numbers, which defect should be remedied.
The Union depot is the central point of the city.
The following are the central streets from which others are numbered, viz : Decatur and Marietta running east and west, and Peachtree, West Peachtree and Whitehall running north and south.
The system of numbering is a very defective one, and difficult to under- stand. Odd numbers are on the right, and even numbers on the left in com- mencing each street.
Ward boundaries, and halls and public buildings, may be found immediately following the " Guide."
Our thanks are due and hereby extended to Mr. H. T. McDaniel, City En- gineer, for his gentlemanly and efficient aid in locating streets, defining bound- aries, etc.
