INTRODUCTORY.
CENSUS, 43.463.
In bringing forth the FIFTH ANNUAL DIRECTORY of Atlanta, we are aware that we have not a perfect work, but we do maintain that it is far superior to any former issue.
There are in this volume 2,681 more names than any previous directory of the city ever contained.
The names herein number 14,568; of these, 10,499 are whites and 4,069 are colored.
With a more circumscribed territory than heretofore, the experienced men who take the census in connection with the directory, make a showing that is beyond dispute. The returns foot up 43,463 total, for the whole district com- prised in the directory. Of these, 26,882 are white and 16,581 are colored-62 per cent. more whites than colored, this is a gain of five per cent for the colored in one year.
We thank the progressive business men for their co- operation in our efforts to place Atlanta's Directory in the front rank of publications of the kind in the South.
THE FREE BUSINESS DIRECTORY of the "Gate City," with which the issue of this volume is identical, will go to many business and commercial points, where a colated, classified index will be appreciated, and will last, and undoubtedly be attended with happy results.
We will seek, in the future, to do what we have in the past-improve, and attain the highest standard.
To Mr. H. H. Dickson thanks are due for the neat typographical and stereotype work.
The public's most obedient,
SHOLES & CO.

GUIDE To Streets and Avenues in Atlanta and Suburbs.
EXPLANATIONS.
Reference to the "Guide" will show the streets, avenues, etc., in alphabetical order, with the intersecting streets added, and, so far as practicable, corner numbers are given, so if one wishes to find, say No. 41 Whitehall, it will be seen that No. 21 is at corner of Alabama, and No. 63 corner of Hunter ; hence, the number sought is between those streets. Many corners are destitute of numbers, which defect should be remedied. The Union depot is the central point of the city.
The following are the central streets from which others are numbered, viz : Decatur and Marietta running east and west, and Peachtree, West Peachtree and Whitehall running north and South.
The system of numbering is a very defective one, and difficult to understand. Odd numbers are on the right, and even numbers on the left in commencing each street.
Ward boundaries, and halls and public buildings, may be found im- mediately following the " Guide."
