PASTURAGE FOR HORSES.

Veterinary Treatment.

5 Separate Pastures, Running Water, Blue Grass, Clover, Bermuda Grass,

All Disabilities Helped and Came Horses Cured

Breaking to Saddle or Harness. HERMITAGE HEIGHTS PASTURAGE.

The Hermitage Heights Pastures contain 200 acres of BLUE GRASS, CLOVER and BERMUDA GRASS, interspersed with beauti- ful running streams, and is unexcelled in this section of the country. A specialty is made of Veterinary Treatment, and the Pasturage has the added advantage of the constant attendance of a Veterinary specialist, who has had thirty-five (35) years' ex- perience in the U. S. Cavalry. Horses are pastured, and if nec- essary, treated for every conceivable ailment (except those of a contagious nature), on very reasonable terms.

A large number of Box Stalls are furnished.

In special cases, arrangements are made to pasture horses at night, obviating the possibility of color being changed or darkened by too much exposure to mid-day sun.

Treatment of Contracted Feet is a specialty. We have in use "Pasture Tips" or "Slippers," which are scientifically applied according to the usuage of the best Veterinary Universities.

In fact, our Veterinary Department is supplied with every appliance for treating all classes of complaint in Horses, (except those of a contagious nature, which we invariably decline), and our experience covers every disease known to the Equine Ana- tomy.

We also take Horses by agreement to feed night and mor- ning.

Thorough Breaking for SADDLE or HARNESS executed by careful and scientific methods.

If your horse shows temper or even undue restiveness, send him to us. We can correct his faults.

If your horse is LAME, or suffering from any other disability n help and probably cure him.

THE FRANKLIN PRINTING AND PUBLISHING CO.

1896:

INTRODUCTION.

As an enthusiastic Atlantian, I applaud the Cotton States and Interna- tional Exposition of 1895 and the glorious results achieved, which are world-wide, and certain to insure future added prosperity and solid growth to this city and section; yet, as the individual manager of the Twentieth Volume of the Atlanta City Directory, I almost deplore it in consequence of the enormous extra amount of work and anxiety it entailed in the prepar- ation of this volume. However, I have faith sufficient in Atlanta and her business citizens to feel assured that they will appreciate my arduous and personally unprofitable work this year by additional patronage and support in future editions.

After four months of continuous work, I am able to place before my patrons a book of 1473 pages, larger by over one hundred and sixty pages than any previous Directory of Atlanta (a typographical error on pages 655-756 in the work for 1895 made that book appear one hundred pages larger than it really was), and containing, exclusive of the special street department of 268 pages, classified business department of 108 pages and miscellaneous department of 32 pages, the names of 33,684 persons in the regular alphabetical name department. The census taken in connection with the work, and from which has been carefully expunged all visitors and floaters, shows a total of 114,340 inhabitants. These figures can be relied on as the present actual population of Atlanta. The vacant houses in the city which may be regarded as desirable or even habitable are very few, and the closing of the Exposition within the past two weeks, with the exodus attending it, has failed to make any appreciable addition to the list, and I fear that our population will not be augmented in its usual annual ratio during the coming year, unless the property owners and builders see to it that quarters are provided for the expected increase.

During an experience in the publication of Directories of nearly twenty years, I have become satisfied that some improvement should be attempted to the end that the public might be supplied with information regarding the whereabouts of new-comers, and changes of residence and business among old residents oftener than the regular aunual directory makes possi- ble. It has always seemed to me that in the case of a change being made in residence, business or location in, say, February, it was rather hard on the man himself and his friends-to say nothing of his creditors-that that change could not be chronicled until the issue of the succeeding direc- tory, eleven months hence, and in endeavoring to devise some means to obviate this difficulty, I have determined to experiment during the coming year, and to issue every three months a supplement to the 1896 Directory, which will contain, so far as is obtainable, an accurate resume of all the various changes which have occurred since the previous issue. I shall keep my force of men constantly at work, and while the expense will be great, nothing will be charged for the service. The supplement will be compiled and arranged exactly similar with the regular Directory, and, to find a name, the plan will be first to consult the supplement, and if not found in it, the presumption will be that the original information in the 1896 book is unchanged. All the regular subscribers to the 1896 Directory will be supplied with the supplement every three months absolutely free of cost to them. I am sanguine that this new departure will prove a suc- cess, for I know that all cities of any size really need such an improve- ment, and the collectors of retail houses alone, without counting the lawyers looking up witnesses, visitors hunting relatives, and the general public who daily refer to the work, must be saved much trouble, time and possi- bly profanity. If I am correct in my conjecture, other cities will soon follow our lead, but the credit for the first real improvement, ever attempted in this particular line, will belong to Atlanta. I shall need some help and assistance, and shall confidently expect that everyone will promptly notify me of any changes which may occur at any time, and I will then at once dispatch a well-trained man to secure all the necessary information for recording the matter in the next supplement.
