FACULTY.

Dr. LEANDER D. CARPENTER,

Dr. WM. PERRIN NICHOLSON

Dr. J. C. JOHNSON,

Dr. FRANK HOLLAND,

Dr. SHEPHERD W. FOSTER,

Dr. LOUIS JONES,

Dr. R. C. YOUNG,

Dr. H. H. JOHNSON.

This school, formerly known as a department of the Southern Medical, is within itself a complete dental school. The new building is designed especially for teaching dentistry. Being located on an elevated site and in no wise obstructed, is most admirably lighted, and in this particular is unsurpassed by any institution in the country of the kind. The infirmary is completely equipped with improved operating chairs and brackets in front of each of the large glass windows.

Students entering this department have an opportunity of attending the lectures in the Medical Department FREE of charge.

Also an opportunity is afforded them to witness the surgical clinics, which is one of the largest of any college in the country and given daily during the entire session. By this arrangement any student in the Dental Department thus has an opportunity of seeing the various characters of surgical operations performed in and about the mouth. Students consequently are thereby enabled to become medically educated at the same time they are acquiring a dental education.

Dentistry of to-day has ceased to be merely a mechanical trade, but its success depends largely upon the therapeutical action of medical agents as appli d to the various diseased conditions. Many of the most progressive of our pro- fession realizing this are acquiring the degree of M.D. with that of D.D.S.

Students in the dental department desiring to obtain the degree of M.D. have the opportunity of matriculating in the Medical Department the senior year, and are thereby enabled to graduate in four years.

Fees Matriculation each year,

To Capitalists

The education which Atlanta University gives to the needy people of the South renders your investments in this region more secure, increases the demand for the merchandise which you desire to sell, and renders more intelligent and efficient the labor that you employ. Course of study comprehensive and thorough, preparing young men for college or for the practical pursuits of life.

Room large, airy and accessible ; furniture new and neat ; chemical and physical apparatus ; cabinet of minerals, botanical collections, charts, globes, maps, and other appliances for effective work.

The long experience of the Principal in the preparation of boys for the University of Georgia, the uniformly high standing of his pupils in college, and their success in after years, fully warrant him in thus present- ing the advantages of his school, and the benefits derived from his personal training.

The discipline of the school is such as will commend itself to the careful consideration of thoughtful parents.

Preface.

In presenting this the twenty-third volume of the Atlanta City Directory to the citizens of Atlanta the publishers wish to thank the public for their generous patronage in the past and solicit a continuance of their favor.

The 1899 Directory has been prepared with the utmost care. The best skill and experience to be procured has been used. The canvassers used in the residence districts were thoroughly in- structed, and their work has been closely scrutinized and carefully edited.

The same method of compilation has been employed as in the past, which is that employed in all metropolitan directories in this country.

Directories in other cities are published at different seasons to comply with their annual customary moving day ; as Atlantians move frequently, and when they like, we have no such advantage, but endeavor to keep advised of the changes until the book is on the press. In comparing the present work with that of 1898, we find less than thirty-five per cent. of the population are at the same address.

We hear complaints that some name is not to be found in the directory ; upon investigation it is discovered that the name is there, but spelled in some unusual or peculiar way which causes it to be compiled at some distance from those pronounced in the same manner.

This new Directory contains the names and addresses of 36,531 persons, firms and corporations, and by using the multiple hereto- fore employed, this gives an estimated population for the city and contiguous tributary territory of 124,207.

We enjoy the privilege of free exchange with members of the Association of American Directory Publishers, and in our library will be found the latest editions of all important city directories. We again call the attention of our patrons to the convenience of our library of directories which they are at liberty to consult.

V. V. BULLOCK, Manager.
