The Atlanta paid Fire Department was organized July 1, 1882; now has a chief engineer, three assist- ant chiefs, one fire inspect- or, ten foremen, three as- sistant foremen, one super- tendent of fire alarm, three engineers, one secretary, 105 men, three steamers, eight two-horse hose wagons, three hook and ladder trucks in service, thirty-six horses @ 17,500 feet of hose, and two double tank two horse chem- ical engines. The annual expense in connection with fire dept is about $107,500. The force is paid as follows: Chief, $4,000 per year; as- sistant chiefs, $1,300, fore- men, $1,200 per annum; engineers, $1,080 per an- num; hoseman, $55 to $65 per month; drivers, $70 per month; superintendent of fire alarm, $1,200 per an- num; secretary $1,000 per annum. The Gamewell fire alarm system is used, with $2 street boxes.
