FIRE DEPARTMENT.
The Atlanta paid Fire Department was organized July 1, 1882; now has a chief engineer, three assistant chiefs, one fire inspector, eleven foremen, two assistant foremen, one superintendent of fire alarms, three engi- ners, one secretary, 105 men, three steamers, eight two- horse hose wagons, three hook and ladder trucks in ser- vice, thirty-six horses, 11,500 feet of hose, and two double tank two-horse chemical engines. The annual expense in connection with fire department is about $107,500. The force is paid as follows: Chief $4,000 per year, assistant chiefs $1,300, foremen $1,200 per annum, engineers $1,080 per annum; hosemen $55 to $65 per month; drivers $70 per month, superintendent of fire alarm $1,200 per annum. The Gamewell fire alarm sys- tem is used, with 88 street boxes.
