Corner Washington and Mitchell streets. Incorporated 1835. First opened at Midway, near Milledgeville, Georgia, when it ran a career of great usefulness. In 1870, after a suspen- sion of some years caused by the late war, the site was changed to Atlanta. While the institution is under the care of the Presbyterian Church, nothing sectarian is admitted into the course of instruction. HISTORY OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOL MOVEMENT.


In the fall of 1869-chiefly through the efforts of Dr. D. C. O'Keefe and Dr. S. H. Stout-the first step was taken toward the establishment of Public Schools in the city of Atlanta, by the adoption of the following resolution by the City Council:


"By Alderman O'Keefe-


"WHEREAS, The success and perpetuity of free institutions depend upon the virtue and intelligence of the people; and whereas, the system of educa- tion known as the Public School System has been proved, by experience, to be best calculated to promote these objects; and whereas, the growth and pros- pective population of our City urgently demand the establishment of a cheap and efficient system of education; be it, therefore,
