Overview of Hawaii Genealogy Records

  • History: Hawaii was first settled in about 300 A.D. The King of Hawaii put Hawaii under the protection of the United States in 1851. The monarchy was overthrown in 1893 and the Republic of Hawaii was established in 1894. Hawaii became a U.S. territory in 1900. It became a state in 1959.
  • Birth records: A few birth records were kept in Hawaii as early as 1842. More records were kept starting in 1896 with complete records being kept by 1929. Birth records from 1896 to the present can be obtained from the Hawaii State Department of Health.
  • Marriage records: A few marriage records were kept in Hawaii as early as 1842. More records were kept starting in 1896 with complete records being kept by 1929. Marriage records from 1896 to the present can be obtained from the Hawaii State Department of Health.
