INTRODUCTORY
This, the 1892, edition of the Des Moines. I. City Directory marks a new departure in the method of its publication. It brings Des Moines in line with the principal cities and conscientiously without regard to ex- of the Union At New York, Chicago pense. This library in our midst will prove a valuable acquisition of great convenience "to business and pro- fessional men. exertions are made to' issue the respective volumes at the earliest moment. ||This method has been adopted here, and now id less than ten weeks from the inception of the work the volume is presented to the citizens, complete. As a product of the bookmaker's att it is a tribute to the pub- lishing |facilities and possibilities of the. city, for it is pre eminently a home en- terprise: |the compilation, printing and binding all having been done here. ||Me- chanically it will compare favorably with any directory in the Union, it having been printed from entirely new type, procured expressly for its use.
But it must be borne in mind that the prime object of a directory is to direct, to enable those seeking information to surely and readily find it and rely upon its strict accuracy: In this respect we can give the most positive assurance. All the work of which it is the result has been under the auspices of Messrs. R. L. Polk & Co., who are . exclusively and more extensively engaged in the compilation of directories, and simi- lar publications, than any concern in this or any other country. No expense or pains have been spared in making this edition of the Des Moines Directory equal in accur- acy and completeness to that of any city in'
the Union! It is our desire to meet the full requirements of this growing city, and to. that end we have labored most earnestly."
It is the intention of the company to makerDes Moines the headquarters for a considerable publishing business, and to' employ from this office' quite a force. of men. A resident manager will locate here, We have had the Des Moines office men- tioned on the cards and stationery at all our offices throughout the entire country, and these cards and letterheads are widely distributed in the course of the year's busi- ness.
