INTRODUCTORY.

N PRESENTING the sixth annual volume of the Des Moines City Directory to our subscribers and patrons, it is almost needless to say that the same labor and effort te secure accuracy and reliability which the ( publishers have always put forth have not been withheld in the prepi ation of the present edition. The ambition of the publishers is to, five the latest and most accurate information , thereby making it a | invaluable work of reference and a necessary adjunct to every well egulated business house and office in the city; and with this end it view we have spared nothing that labor or money (together with many years of experience in this line of work) could do to render it as complete and accurate a publication as it is possible for human skill to produce. We know by the patronage ¡extended to us by our business men that our efforts are duly appreciated, but it is impossible for one unaccustomed to this line of business to realize the amount of constant labor and unceasing care it requires to attain the degree of accuracy contained in this volume.

¥ POPULATION.

Great interest vi - . manifested every year. in the estimate we make of the popul ition of Des Moines. The opinion seems to have prevaled that "here would be a slight decrease, but such is not the case. Ou " alphabetical list this year has 27, 180 names 522 more than last edition. , Multiplying as we have done here} : 1 tofore by 21% to include women and children we make our popula- tion 67,950, a, gain over last year of 1,490. Of this increase wę may justly feel proud as the times have not been conducive to the growth of cities and many cities found themselves poorer in point of numbers than they did one year ago.

Yours truly,

R. L. POLK & CO.
