INTRODUCTORY

The canvass for the information contained in this, the nineteenth edl- tion of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Des Moines City and Valley Junction Directory, has been as complete as is possible to make it and covers all the terri- tory included within the limits of Greater Des Moines. :

As well as being an annual enrollment of the citizens, their occupa- tion and places of business and residence, the City Directory is a record and an exposition of the city's progress from year to year, and a com- plete encyclopedia of everything that pertains to the people, their gov- ernment, churches, schools, societies, clubs, associations and other in- stitutions. It is one of the most frequently consulted books in print and wherever used is a splendid advertisement of the city's resources.

.'POPULATION OF GREATER DES MOINES, 109,355.

In this issue, not counting business firms, corporations, duplicates, churches, schools, etc., there are 43,742 individual names. Using the .multiple of 21%- to allow for the names of women and children not in- cluded in the canvass-we have a present population of 109,355 for the area covered by the Directory.

There is considerable difference between the Directory estimate and the result of the recent Federal enumeration-The Directory canvass is made under a duplicate system, including both residence and place of business or employment, which reduces to a minimum the chance of omissions and the work is performed by men who are trained to it and who follow it as an occupation. The government census is the result of a single residential enumeration, which presents few if any opportunities for proof of its correctness, and is usually conducted by persons having no prior experience in such work. Again, the work of the United States census is confined stictly to the limits of the city, whereas the Directory canvass has always reached beyond the city limits in all directions where thouands of names are obtained which will be found listed in this book and which make it much more valuable as a work of reference than it would be were the publishers to leave out the adjacent territory. Taking these conditions into consideration it is reasonably certain that the Directory estimate is nearer the actual population.

DES MOINES TODAY.

The capital and commercial metropolis of Iowa and the city that is doing things-big things and many of them, is beautifully and health, fully located on gently sloping hills at the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers pear the geographical center of the state.

The city's railroad facilities are not surpassed anywhere, each of the following lines giving distinct and independent outlets: Burlington Route; Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific; Chicago Great Western; Chi- cago & Northwestern; Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul; Fort Dodge, Des
