That any person who willfully and for profit shall infringe any copyright secured by this Act, or who shall knowingly and willfully aid or abet such infringement, shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by imprisonment for not exceeding one year, or by a fine of not less than one hundred dollars, nor more than one thousand dollars, or both, at the discretion of the court.

The twenty-first volume of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Des Moines and Valley Junction Directory is herewith presented. --


POPULATION OF GREATER DES MOINES.


In this volume there are 45,090 names of individuals who resided in Greater Des Moines at the time the information was taken. Multiply this number by 212-to allow for the names of women and children not included in the canvass-and we have a population.of 113,720.


DES MOINES TODAY.


Government .- The city is under the operation of the Des Moines Plan of municipal government. Under the Des Moines Plan the en- tire government of the city is vested in a commission of five. One of this number is the mayor and the entire body constitutes the council. Each member is elected from the city at large upon a non-partisan ticket. The commissioner executive of


function of government is divided in five parts, each being the head of a department. The mayor is the the Department of Public Affairs by virtue of his office. The initiative, the referendum and the recall are combined with gov- ernment by commission in the Des Moines Plan. 1

Fort Des Moines, only United States cavalry post in the country, lies five miles south of city and is connected by electric railway.


The state has here a capitol building costing $4,000,000; historical build- ing costing $500,000; state fair grounds, representing $2,500,000 invested; all the departments of the state government and headquarters for all the state institutions.


Advertising Des Moines-A copy of this Directory is placed by the pub- lishers in the Directory Libraries of the principal cities throughout the country, whereby all the information contained in the work is placed at the disposal of the people of these cities for immediate reference.
