Stability Al Permanency
Do you realize that a City Directory advertisement is a testimonial to the per- manency, the stability, of the advertiser?
That's the sort of concern all of us want to patronize, because we know when they sell us merchandise they are behind it in every way, today, tomorrow, and for the years to' come.
,
"Fly-by-night," "fire-sale" and other temporary of "get-rich-quick" concerns rarely appear in the City Direc- tory.
And it is a noteworthy fact that the concerns which advertise one year in the city directory are there again next year. 90% of directory advertising is renewed.
Directory advertising, is profitable. In connection with the class- ifod business headings it is doubly effective.
May we explain how and why it will pay you?

Detroit Dire.tory Library- Every Directory Ofi.e is a Branch
HOW DIRECTORY
LIBRARIES ARE USED
He Wanted to Buy a Home
"Who sells ready-cut houses?" said a man to us the other day. "There is nobody listed under that heading in the Detroit City Directory, but I know there is some concern out in the State which sells them."
Reference to the Michigan State Gazet- teer (State Business Directory) soon told him that the concern he wished was the North American Construction Company, of Bay City, Mich .. "I will write and order what I want at once." was his parting remark.
Where one instance of this sort comes to our attention, the same things are happen- ing over and over again wherever a City Directory is to be found.
If you will trace back new customers to find out how they found you, City Direct- ory classified lists will receive their share of the credit.
A $50,000.00 Order
A traveling man from St. Louis called on a wholesale dry goods house in St. Paul, to sell salvage goods. They did not deal in that class of goods.
Later the firm dissolved. One partner decided to engage in that line of trade and wanted to buy a complete stock, amounting to about $50,000.00.
He called at our office and examined the St. Louis Directory to find the name of the house the agent represented. The class- ification "Salvage Goods" did not show it.
We, being more familiar with the class- ifications in a Directory, found it under "Bankrupt Stocks," much to the delight of the jobber, and a tremendous order was placed with the salvage house.
The classified section of the City Directory is the greatest buyers' guide on earth., Any one classification may secure the largest order and the best customer, any. or every day in the year, and its omission may lose a large order at any time.
Every day, all over the country, thousands of people are consulting Polk's Directory , Libraries. We offer you the free use of our directories for single reference.
Many Directories of various cities are bought by progressive concerns, who desire up- to-date mailing lists, classified by trades and otherwise.
Ask for a free copy of our "Directory of Directories," or for our "List of Mailing Lists."

Introductory
This is the twenty-third edition of R. L. Polk and Co's., Des Moines and Valley Junction Directory. Few people realize the enormous volume of work incident to the canvass, compilation and printing of the book. In the territory covered, each dwelling, office and factory has been visited by one of our representatives- often several visits are necessary to verify im- perfectly given information. Infinite pains are required in sorting and compiling these names after they have been secured, because people will move both their residence and their business location and some even move more than once. This makes necssary many "Dispatches." Dispatching is continued until the printing is complete, as we are ever willing to register a change in location up to the time of printing the name for which the new location is given.
The Directory, which contains an answer to almost every question which may be asked about the City is placed by the publishers in the Directory Libraries in all the important Cities of the Country, where it stands as an indisputable testimonial of the progressiveness of the City and its people. It has been said that the Directory represents the City and its business interests, and live, up-to-date business men appreciating this fact are glad to avail themselves of the opportunity of taking space in the Directory, not only for the benefits which they personally derive, but in a spirit of pat- riotism and a view of boosting their City.
The Index to Information contained in the Directory will be found im- mediately following this introductory.
POPULATION OF GREATER DES MOINES.
In the present issue there are 47,686 names of individuals who resided in Greater Des Moines at the time the information was taken. Multiply this number by 21%-to allow for the names of women and children not in- cluded in the canvass,-and we have an estimated population of 119,215 for the territory covered by the Directory.
SHIPPING FACILITIES.
(From Chamber of Commerce Journal, Des Moines, November, 1914.) In Iowa, all intra state shipments, either by express or by freight, are governed by the Iowa distance tariffs.
Under this tariff, which fixes the maximum rates by classes of freights or by commodities, that the roads are permitted to charge by a series of five-mile unit rates, the city with the central location and the city with the largest number of railroads has the advantage over competitors on all intra state business.
This for the reason the rates are built on the theory of a continuous shipment over the rails of a single company with the initial rates for the first few five-mile units built high to cover cost of originating, loading and billing freights, there is, however, a provision for shipments over con- necting lines. For this service the sum of the locals over each of the two Mnes is arrived at and the rate fixed at 80 per cent of this sum. This means that because of the fact the rates are fixed high for the first two

necessity be high. To miles. If the shipment was to be made 100 miles over rails of one company and 25 miles over those of another, the sum of the two locals at 24 cents for 100 miles and 17 cents for 25 miles, or 41 cents, would be taken and the combination rate would be 32.3 cents or 4.8 cents higher than over the rails of the one company.
Exactly the same rule applies to shipments by freight, except that ex- press companies are permitted to meet short line mileage to competitive points while the railroads are not.
Now Des Moines is fortunate in that it is the only city near the center of the state with enough railroads to make it an important shipping point. In short, every railroad in Iowa operating over 100 miles of road comes into this city over its own rails with the single exception of the Illinois Central. However, we reach with Des Moines roads 51 of the Illinois Cen- tral stations in Iowa, which is over 50 per cent and includes every im- portant point on this system.
In short, over 90 per cent of the stations in Iowa are reached by Des Moines roads and over 85 per cent are reached by the 164 package cars loaded at Des Moines depots with first 24-hour deliveries.
Every express company doing business in Iowa operates out of Des Moines except the Northern and it reaches but eleven stations in Iowa.
This ought to establish the fact beyond argument that Des Moines is the logical and the economical point from which to reach the trade of this state.
Iowa's per capita wealth last year was $1,839. This is the largest of any state in the Union. This year the increase in crop values compared to a year ago is $18 per capita of the population. We have the largest per capita purchasing power of any state in the Union and Des Moines is the point from which to take advantage of this.
