The twenty-seventh edition of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Des Moines Directory is herewith presented to our patrons and the public with the assurance that it will be found as complete and accurate as usual. All departments of the Directory which have been included in former editions are con- tinued in this issue and have been added to and improved where possible.
The Directory consists of four essential departments: The Miscel- laneous, the Alphabetical List of Names, the Street and Avenue Guide and Directory of Householders and the Classified Business Directory. The . departments are compiled in the order stated. Persons not familiar with the compiled arrangements of information are referred to the Indexes on pages 28 to 33.
POPULATION OF GREATER DES MOINES.
The total number of names in the present Des Moines City Directory is 58,718. In this number is included no firm name, church, school, insti- tution nor anything else which does not stand for the name of an indi- . vidual. Using the multiple of 212-to allow for the names of women and children not represented in its columns-we have 134,295 as the esti- mated population for the territory covered by the Directory canvass.
