Des Moines has the largest convention building in Iowa, and one of the largest in the West. The Coliseum has an arena with seating capacity for 9,000 persons. This may be converted into an exhibit hall with a level and unobstructed floor space 104x197 feet. There is a smaller as- sembly hall in the building seating 900 persons and there are also several committee rooms.


Des Moines is the capital of Iowa. The State has here a capitol cost- ing $3,000,000; historical building costing $500,000; State Fair grounds representing $2,500,000 invested. All of the departments of the State government and headquarters of all the State institutions are in Des Moines.


Des Moines is governed by the Des Moines Plan. Five councilmen are elected at large, are assigned to departments and like the directory board of a bank, direct its affairs.

DIRECTIONS FOR GIVING AN ALARM OF FIRE.


1. To give an alarm, go to the near- est box, break glass, turn key, open door, pull the hook to the bottom of the slot once and let go; leave door open.


2. Do not pull the hook if the fire bell or small bell in the box is strik- ing as that indicates that an alarm has already been given.


RATES OF FARE AUTHORIZED BY CITY ORDINANCES RELATIVE TO PUBLIC CARRIAGE, ETC.


Section 13 of Section 507 of 1900 revision. That the owner or driver of any omnibus, carriage, cab, herdic, or other, vehicle licensed under this chap- ter, shall be entitled to demand and receive not to exceed twenty-five cents (25c) for each passenger conveyed any distance not exceeding one mile.


For each passenger over one mile and under two miles fifty cents (50c). For each passenger with trunk one mile and under two miles, seventy- five cents (75c). Each additional pas- senger of the same party, twenty-five cents (25c). Provided, that sixteen blocks shall constitute one mile. And they shall be entitled to add to the above rate between the hours of 12 o'clock at night and 6 a. twenty five cents (25c) for each passenger. And are entitled to charge when em. ployed by the hour, one and 50-100 dollars ($1.50) for the first hour, and'

for each additional hour one dollar ($1); and they are hereby required to convey any passenger carried by them to such part of the city as he or she may require.


Children under five years of age ac- companying any person who has paid full fare shall not be charged fare, and children between the ages of five and ten years shall be charged half fare. Any person violating any of the provisions of this ordinance 'shall De subject to a fine of not less than five nor more than one hundred dollars.


PUBLIC SCHOOLS.


The Independent School District of Des Moines under the consolidation law embraces all of the territory and school houses within the corporate limits of the city. Seventeen districts enter into this consolidation. Twelve of these were partly in and partly out and those portions of the districts in- side the city are now a part of the consolidated district. The territory of the other five districts was wholly `within the city so that three districts were taken in entire.
