Central offices of the Iowa State Highway Commission in Ames, completed in 1961
The Iowa State Highway Commission
The Iowa State Highway Commission was created in 1904 as a function of the Engineering Division of Iowa State University. In 1913, it was established as an independent department of the state government, and a three-member Commission was appointed, which in turn employed the first chief engineer.
The office at Ames is the headquarters for the state. In addition, there are six districts, 26 resident construction offices and 24 resident maintenance offices located through- out the state. These field offices play an important role in handling planning, construction and maintenance on the state's primary system, and in promoting good relations between the Commission and the public.
The Highway Commission is responsible for 8,759 miles of rural primary highways, 1,087 miles of primary extensions in cities and towns, 201 miles of state park and institution roads and joint control with the 99 boards of supervisors over 91,399 miles of secondary roads.
The annual business in fiscal 1961-62 totaled $86,952,- 652.18 for primary roads and $19,663,518.44 on farm-to-mar- ket roads. Since the first law was enacted in 1917, accepting federal aid, $1,614,547,489.59 has been spent on the primary road and farm-to-market road systems under the Commis- sion's supervision.
The Commission employs 3,434 engineers, administrative assistants and maintenance men in all of its departments. About 850 are located at Ames.
The Commission, on request, renders engineering assist- ance to various other state departments. This includes the making of surveys and preparation of plans and general supervision of construction and maintenance of public high- ways upon or adjacent to lands belonging to the state at the various educational, charitable and penal institutions, and at state parks, engineering assistance to the executive coun- cil on street improvements on and adjacent to the capitol grounds, assistance to the National Guard on projects in connection with the National Guard camp, various other technical matters which may come before such other state departments.
Ames Public Schools
With modern, well-equipped school buildings and with modern educational philosophies and practices, the Ames Public Schools offer a splendid opportunity for the educa- tion of the children of the city. The school plant comprises sixteen buildings, with a present total new replacement value of $8,893,348. This plant includes the new Senior High School that is not completed but has capacity to house the senior high school students; the downtown Central Junior High School building with its splendid auditorium and gym- nasium facilities; the Welch Junior High and Elementary School; the Beardshear, Crawford, Edwards, Lincoln, North Grant, Meeker, Roosevelt, Sawyer and Willson Elementary Schools; the Field House and equipment. A fine stadium and lighted athletic field also are a part of the school plant.
Pupil enrollment in October, 1962, was 4,900. The teach- ing staff numbers 247, and there are 51 other personnel- secretaries, cafeteria ladies and custodians. The Ames schools have a fine staff of supervisors who give guidance in the curriculum areas at all levels.
During the past twelve years seven different bond issues have successfully carried to authorize the construction of three new elementary schools, additions to five elementary schools, remodeling of the junior high school facilities and a new Senior High School. There were a total of 54 elemen- tary classrooms with related facilities and 47 secondary classrooms in these construction projects. The new Senior High School is being constructed a unit at a time as funds permit on a beautiful, spacious 74 acre site. The third unit is now under construction. Some additional well-located sites have been acquired upon which to build more schools to meet the needs of the growing enrollment. While the enrollment of the Ames Public Schools has been increasing by about 250 children each year, the average teaching load has been kept below 30 children per teacher by providing additional classroom space and more teachers.
Conclusion
From the foregoing factual data, it can be seen that Ames offers many advantages-social, economic, educa- tional. It has an exceptionally high health rating; it is a city of beautiful homes, situated in one of the fairest states in the land, in the heart of the world's wealthiest agricul- tural region. Ames possesses virtually every element vital to the social and economic welfare and personal happiness of the individual, and every element of success for the small business or small industry.
Ames is truly a CITY OF OPPORTUNITY.

OUT OF SIGHT! OUT OF MIND! OUT OF BUSINESS!
The importance of keeping firm and product names in the public eye is recognized by all business men. It is astonishing to see how a firm or product, however meritorious, will slip into the limbo of the forgotten if not persistently advertised.
THE CITY DIRECTORY IS THE NATURAL MEDIUM FOR KEEPING A BUSINESS OR PROD- UCT NAME IN THE SPOTLIGHT. INSIST ON BEING WELL REPRESENTED IN ITS PAGES.

PLEASE! Do Not Lend Your CITY DIRECTORY
IT COSTS YOU MONEY-Every Time it Is Loaned
The practice of lending your City Directorv, in a great measure, is responsible for the increasing cost of Directory Service. The reason is :- There is a definite cost involved in the making of the DIRECTORY of Your City.
THIS COST MUST RE ABSORBED BY THE SUBSCRIBERS-BE THEY ONE-OR BE THEY 1000.
If there were but ONE SUBSCRIBER to the CITY DIRECTORY-THE ONE SUBSCRIBER would of necessity have to absorb THE WHOLE COST.
If there were 100 SUBSCRIBERS-each one would have to absorb 1/100th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.
If there were 1000 SURSCRIBEPC-each one would have to absorb 1/1000th PART OF THE WHOLE COST.
From which it is obvious that the GREATER the number of subscribers -the LESSER the cost to each. And It is also obvious that the LESSER the number of subscribers-the GREATER the cost to each. Every time you loan your City Directory the LESS NECESSITY THERE IS FOR THE BORROWER TO SUBSCRIBE FOR THE SERVICE.
MORE BORROWERS result in FEWER SUBSCRIBERS which means INCREASED COST.
