Statistical Review

Location-In the geographic center and the county seat of 50,000 population Story County. Bisected by U. S. High- way 30 and on the main line of the Chicago and Northwest- ern and on the Rock Island railroad running from the Twin Cities to Kansas City. Excellent bus service all directions with good connections for motor freight deliveries.

Housing has boomed in Nevada. A population growth from 3,750 to 4,230 in 10 years has seen two new "additions" fill with modern homes like these in southeast Nevada. Two additions are being completed now.

Agricultural Wealth-Nevada is located nearly in the geographic center of the state and centers one of the great- est agricultural areas in the world. The County Extension office is located here with all the activities of a scientific and educational program for Story County farmers and their children. There is also the ASC office, administering gov- ernment programs for Story County agriculturalists, and the SCD department, handling conservation projects on county farmlands. In 1960 Story County raised 10,867,733 bushels of corn.

Weather-Rainfall averages 35 inches per year.

Municipal Bonded Debt-$142,000 general obligation bonds (Jan. 1, 1962).

Trade Area-Farmers' trade center for greater part of Story County.

Utilities-Natural gas, Iowa Electric Light and Power Company, city water, 220 blocks of paved streets, new $257,- 000 sewage disposal plant put in operation September, 1962.

INTRODUCTION

Nevada's Reuben H. Donnelley plant employs 500 persons and in peak operation twice that number. It is the town's largest employer and exerts a tremendous force in Nevada's community life.

Business-Approximately 165 retail establishments, 17 industries; 2 banks with deposits of about $11,000,000, plus Nevada Federal Home Loan and National Farm Loan estab- lishments; Reuben H Donnelley Corp. plant employing 500 persons; General Telephone system serving six communities; Continental Sales Co., manufacturer of fertilizer blending plants; Graphic Forms, employing 100, printing sales forms; Continental Fertilizer; and the Nevada Brick and Tile Fac- tory; Municipal Airport. Only eight miles from multi-mil- lion dollar National Animal Disease Laboratory. One mod- ern hotel and three motels. Two cabin and trailer camps. Federal Post Office is one of the largest in the U. S. for community of 4,300 people. Community served by six-day daily newspaper with a circulation of 4,100.

Health-Community has four medical doctors, two os- teopaths and two chiropractors. Nevada is the site of a $400,000 county hospital built in 1951 and recognized as one of the most modern and efficient for its size in the United States.

INTRODUCTION

Nevada's new (1957) swimming pool was built with $75,000 in donated money. Kids from all over East Story County come here to take part in summer Red Cross water safety programs and just to have fun.

Recreation-Lighted baseball park, field house, football field, summer softball leagues, three gymnasiums, motion picture theatre, country club and grass green golf course, $75,000 swimming pool completed in 1957, new $300,000 com- munity building slated for completion in spring, 1963, two tennis courts and an outdoor basketball court to be used for ice skating in winter to be built soon. Two beautiful parks supplement city recreational assets and a continuous program of improvement is handled by the City Park Board.

Social Organizations-Rotary, Lions, Wa-tan-ye, Sorop- timist, Toastmaster International, Women's Club groups, Hiking and Camping Associations, Boating Club, Boys and Girls Scouts, Brownies and Cubs, Golden Age Club, VFW,

City Park Board funds have helped turn Nevada's 4-H grounds into a summer recreational park for children and adults. West Indian Creek meanders down along the south edge of the grounds. In late summer Story County youngsters use the barns for a big 4-H fair.

American Legion and Auxiliaries, Rebecca, Masonic, Odd Fellow Lodges, Eastern Star and two restricted membership study clubs.

Education-A new $650,000 high school was completed in the summer of 1962, highlights several years of growth into the strongest and most centrally located system in the county. An enrollment of 1,485 was registered in 1962, with 398 in the three-year senior high school. A new $200,000 elementary school was built in 1955. The Seventh Day Ad- ventist Church also operates a high school in Nevada with about 140 pupils attending Oak Park Academy and an S.D.A. Parochial grade school. The City maintains an excellent library with in excess of 9,000 volumes.

Fire Protection-A highly-trained volunteer unit with a full-time paid chief. It operates city and rural units equipped with two-way radio. Fire loss is extremely small.

A recently completed economic survey of the twelve township trade area of Nevada is guiding the retail com- munity to growth through better service . . . an indication that the town's 19 percent population growth in the last ten years will be sustained in the coming years by an active and alert citizenry anxious to maintain Nevada's reputation as a good business town and an excellent place to raise a family.
