Main divisions: Agriculture, Engineering, Science, Home Economics, Veterinary Medicine.

Research activities extend through all divisions, and are well-known throughout the world. Outstanding research achievements in live stock, crops and soils; dairy industry; agricultural engineering; veterinary science; agricultural by-products; general engineering, especially highway con- struction and safety factors; and industrial health and safety problems.

Iowa State Highway Commission

The Iowa State Highway Commission was created in 1904 as a function of the Engineering Division at Iowa State College, independently established in 1913.

The physical plant, erected in 1924 on five acres donated by the people of Ames, includes a commodious administra- tion building, testing laboratory, numerous shops and gar- ages. Maintenance stations and divisional offices reach into every county.

The highway program has accomplished the con- struction of 5,665 miles of concrete paved highways in Iowa, partly with Federal aid, and 795 miles of bituminous (black- top) surfacing, and has built a system of graveled farm-to- market roads reaching into nearly every local agricultural community in the state.

Approximately $463,000,000 has been spent on highway construction by the Commission since 1925.

Personnel: The Commission has employed as many as 2,500 persons at one time, including engineers, administra- tive officers and workers in all lines, and currently main- tains a staff of about 340 in Ames.

STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION

Main administration building, housing the general offices, engineering and drafting divisions, and numerous other functions. Materials-testing labora- tory, shops and central garages also are located on this five-acre tract donated to the State by the people of Ames.

Ames Public Schools

With modern, well-equipped school buildings and with modern educational philosophies and practices, the Ames Public Schools offer a splendid opportunity for the educa- tion of the children of the city. The school plant com- prises ten buildings, with a present total valuation of $2,491,- 261.08. These include the $1,179,150.13 modern High School building with its splendid auditorium and gymnasium facil- ities; the Central Junior High School; the Welch Junior High and Elementary School; Beardshear, Crawford, Lin- coln, Roosevelt and Whittier elementary schools; the Frank- lin Opportunity School; and the Field House. A fine stadium and lighted athletic field also are a part of the school plant.

Pupil enrollment for 1948-49 totaled 2,398; teaching staff, 110; other personnel, 23.

A recent bond issue of $750,000 was passed by the citizens of Ames to construct two new elementary school buildings, to replace Franklin Opportunity School and for the reconstruction of gymnasium, locker rooms and shower facilities in Central Junior High School.

St. Cecilia's School enrollment for 1948-49 was 154.

Conclusion

From the foregoing factual data, it can be seen that the city of Ames offers many advantages-social, economic, edu- cational. It has an exceptionally high health rating; it is a city of beautiful homes, situated in one of the fairest states in the land, in the heart of the world's wealthiest agricul- tural region. Ames possesses virtually every element vital to the social and economic welfare and personal happiness

AMES HIGH SCHOOL

The High School is strictly up-to-the-minute in approved equipment, with a schedule of well-balanced courses taught by competent instructors. Its graduates rank outstandingly high in college work.
