From April, 1860, till December, 1860, spother vacancy in the pulpit. occurred, when Rev. Orlando Clarke was invited to supply it, which he did till the next Spring, Then the church was again vacant from April, 1861 till the Fall of 1862. At this time the Rev,.Wm. Sorither, of New Jersey, visited Des Moines, and spending the winter of 1802-8 here for his health; the church invited him to supply their pulpit during this time, which he did.


The pulpit was then again vacant till April, 1864, when by invite tion the Rev. D. L. Hughes began his labors here, and a committee of the Presbytery of Des Moines, on June 28d, 1865, installed him pastor of this church. , Mr. Hughes' health having failed, and not likely to be permanently restored, in April, 1866, he resigned his charge, and the I pulpit was again declared vacant.


The total number of actual members is 46.


Prayer meetings regularly on Wednesday evening. " Sabbath School at 9 o'clock.

Wesley Chapel, M. E. Church, is situated on the East side of the Des Moines river, on Keokuk St., between Seventh St. and Pennsylva. nia Avenue.

CHURCHES.


Rev. J. Lete was called, and began the labor in this field the 22d of November, 1863.

To the congregation belong eleven families four wives with their children, four widows, and eight single persons, in all about one hun- dred souls ..


The congregation formerly met in a house on Walnut street,'oppo- site Mr. Ensign's livery stable, but was compelled by circumstances, to build a church of their own. This was in 1864- said church being thirty feet by forty feet- is situated on the north side of Locust between First and Second streets, and is also used during the week for the German School of the congregation, attended now by fifty children The minister lives in the back part of the house. J. Lotz is the pres, ent pastor. -


SECOND CHRISTIAN CHURCH.


This church was organized Sept. 23d, 1860; Elder Peter T. Russell officialing -with 20 members. Among the prominent members at that time were Jas. L. Scott, Charles Nichols, J. K. Gilcrest|David Hunter, Thos. Hendryx, Sam'l Bell, Anderson Simons, Sam'l Van- Cleve, and D. D. Skinner.


Since the organization, the church has had the pastoral labor of Elders, P. T. Russell, J. B. Noe, John Kimmons, and James E. Gaston, who is the present Pastor. Number of members 175: Their nety house of worship just completed is on Cherry street immediately south of the Court House is a nest and plain but substantial brick building 45 hy 65 feet.


The Sunday School has 100 scholars under the care of E. M. Davia the superintendent.


Services every Lord's day as follows: Sunday School at 9 o clock A. M. Preaching at 104 o'clock; A. M. and 7 o'clock, P. M. |Prayer -

THIRD PRESBYTERIAN (N. 8.).


The Third Presbyterian Church of Des Moines (N. S.) was orga- nized January 30th, 1864, with 20 members Rev. . Monroe Phillipe commenced his labors with this congregation, on the 10th of July, 1863.' The church has been favored with an increase of 50 per cent. to its membership since its organization,


The public services are at 101 o'clock, A. M. and 71 o'clock, P. D. : The Sunday School which is in a flourishing condition meets at 9 o'clock, A. M.

RAILROADS - STAGES.


RAILROADS.


The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific (late the Mississippi and Mis- souri) Railroad is now completed to Kellogg, a distance of one pun- dred and thirty-seven miles. Construction is now guing on,and it is expected the road will be opened to Des Moines in April 1867 ..


The Des Moines Valley Railroad commences st Keokuk on the Miss- issippi. River, and was completed to this city the first of September of- the present year ..


The Chicago and North Western Railway commerces et Chicago and will be completed to Council Bluffs, the western terminus before the coming Spring. Direct connection with this road is now made at Ames' Station by coaches from this city.


The lowa and Minnesota Railway, commences at this city, and is already under contract from this city to Ames' Station .: From thence it will go northward to connect with the Minnesota Central Railroad to St. Paul.


The Ft. Des Moines and. Kansas City Railroad is now surveyed and located from this city to Indianola in Warren county. Work will be large subsprip" commenced at once, and the road built at an early day, tions for that purpose, having already been made


With the Chicago, R. L & Pacific Road completed, to Des Moines; Polk County will have direct connection with Chicago, and St. Louis, two powerful competing markets, the importance and value of which will be incalculable to the development and prosperity of the city and county, Property which is now fluctuating between real and prospeo- tive value, will assume a more stable condition, increasing in wealth only in proportion to the growth of the city.


STAGES .:


The Western Stage Company's coaches connect daily at Kellogg with cars of the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific R. R. formerly MI & M. R. R.). Passengers for this road take cars of the Des Moines Val- ley R. R., distance by stage 22 miles.


At Ames' Station daily, with cars of the Chicago & North-Western Railway, distance 82 miles. -
