| At their recent State Convention in this city, the Baptists of Iowa adopted this institution as the University of their denomination. To this end they will raise' $50,000 by January, 1872, for its endowment, and the citizens of Des Moines will raise a like amount for the same purpose. A debt of $10,000 on the property has already been canceled, mainly through the labors of Rev.p. F. Childis.

Rev. J. A. Nash is the Secretary, and is doing a great deal for the growth of the University.

The ground is to be leveled, trees planted and grass sown. The gas fixtures of the house cost $3,000, and include 802 burners. The chandelier in the Court room has forty-eight burners, and cost $800.

The heating apparatus cost $7000.1 The marble tiling delivered in the city cost about $3000

The ceiling in the Post Office and hall is divided into panels and every room has cornices in its corners!

One hundred and eighty-five thousand dollars have already been expended on the structure.

The furniture for the various offices will be worth ten thousand dollars.

The building is almost fire proof. The doors were manufactured Here, and are of walnut and cherry Limber.) All the wood work of the interior is varnished and left its natunil color.

The building in all its parts is fully a magnificent piece of work, an ornament to Des Moines and a credit to the United States Govern- ment.

We have heard folks who have seen many - postoffices, say that ours is the finest in inward | finish 'and arrangement of any in the United States, and we believe in saying this they speak truthfully.

We make mention of the above named temperance organization, as it is expected there will be a Chapter established here before long.' This order is somewhat similar to the I. O. G. T. in its workings, except they have no Degree Lodges; their obligation is not life-long, binding only while a person is a member of the Chapter. They forbid avery thing that will intoxicate, but thinking that swpot cider should not be forbid- den, no more than the apple or apple butter, as it is not called alcohol until fermentation takes place.
