PRESENT PROSPECTS.

What facilities, it is asked, has Des Moines, either natural or acquired, for becoming the commercial center? We have said that we have citizens who are wide-awake; that we are build- ing extensively and substantially; that we look beyond and bet neath all this. Unlike the Iowa cities on the Mississippi and Missouri, which are numerous, Des Moines has no rival. This will allow Des Moines to make a far greater growth than it could otherwise hope to attain. Please take a glance at the map, and think of the prospective roads whose termini will be at Des Moines, and that the roads east, west, north and south,

are extending their arms for their share of the merchandise and freight which must come here .? The present cheap fates of real estate, and in view of the' large mechanical population which will be brought here in the: construction of railroads, the establishing of manufactories, and other works, we know of no other place on the American con- tinent which presents better opportunities for the investment of capital, or which promises a more enduring prosperity

BUSINESS, MANUFACTURING INTERESTS, &C.

: For the Western trade, what town - so favorably situated? With the before-named advantages to make it the market for' the West, and insuring it cheap transportation from the East,: it could not be better situated in reference to this trade. Indeed, the progress already made in this direction is some indication of what may be expected in the future !! The great increase in the population of the western part of our State fenders the trade very important, and Des Moines, from its central position, seems destined to become the head- : quarters for the trade in Iowa

: No city in lowa presents so good a prospect for the future as Des Moines. In no other is evidence of as, much enterprise. In 1857 the city was incorporated. The United States census of 1850, seven years before, placedi ut population at 515. Three years later, in 1860, it had increased to 418i, and in the ten years immediately following the; gain was 7,854, giving a. total population in 1870 of #2,035. ISihre then our population: has increased, until this year it is sixteen thousand seven hun- dred and twenty.

We learn from our builders and, contractors that there has been an unusually large number of dwelling houses erected this last summer | The coming season will probably be one of unusual activity in building, that will witness a large and rapid growth to our city, - Few cities in the West can present more actual progress than Des Moines.

In: 1866 the first railroad reached Des Moines, now we have, 'six! "Two others are partially graded, and one" the St. Louis line iwill probably be in operation before many months. No other city in the State is to day as favorably situated Jas Des Moines so far as railroads are concerned

Des Moines has every element necessary to make it a great! manufacturing center. Coal is abundant and cheap An inex- haustible water power is here, and railfonds in every direction are ready to bring in the raw material and carry yout the man- utactured articles. : The success of the factories already estab-

lished and the rapid settlement of the country tributary to the city are warrants for the establishment of many more. We take pleasure in noticing that Des Moines manufactures are equal in appearance and quality to the best products of Eastern manufacturing cities.

We are in receipt of letters from parties in the Eist desiring, to settle in Des Moines and engage in manufacturing |It is safe to say that more Eastern capital is to day looking toward Des Moines for investment than toward any other lowa town ..

Viewed in the light of these facts, Des Moines possesses no ordinary interest; and he who studies the situation disinterest- edly will not undervalue its importance, or ignore its well- grounded hopes of future prosperity and greatness It cannot hope to rival Chicago, or eclipse San Francisco, but it may reasonably expect to be the metropolis of Iowa!

RAILROADS OF DES MOINES!

The first train of cars that entered the city came over the Des Moines Valley (now the Keokuk & Des Moines) Railroad,' in August, 1866. The Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Rail- road was completed in September, 1867; the Indianola and Winterset branches about two years since, and the Des Moines & Minnesota Railroad was completed in July, 1874.

Des Moines has now six railroads in operation as follows :: Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific; H. F. Royce, superinten- dent, office rod, Third.

Keokuk & Des Moines; H. Coykendall, "agent, office Mar -; ket between Third and Fourth.

Des Moines & Fort Dodge; C. H. Gilmore, superintendent office Aborn Block!

Des Moines, Indianola & Missouri; H. F. Royce, superin tendent; office 100 Third. Des Moines! Winterset & Southwestern; H. Fr Royce, su- perintendent, office 100 Third.
