No city in Iowa presents so good a prospect for l'e fu turelas Des Moines; no other gives evidence of mene en- terprise. In I8hg the Government established a foe with a small garrison, and the same was designated For Des Moines. | In June, 1846, the town of Fort Des Moines was laid out.[ In 1857 the city of Des Moines washincor !! porated. of the city to-day amounts up into the millions of dollars jannually, and is steadily on the increase.

--

Des Moines has every dement necessary to make it a great manufacturing center. [Coal is abundant and cheap. An inexhaustible water power is here, and railroads in. every direction are ready to bring in the raw material and carry out the manufactured articles. The success of the factories already established and the rapid settlement of the country tributary to the city are warrants for the es- tablishment of many more

We take pleasure in noticing that Des Moines manu- factures are equal in appearance and quality to the best products of Eastern manufacturing cities.

In 1860 the first railroad reached Des Moines; now we have six. Two others are partially graded, and will prob- ably be in operation before many months. No other city in the State is to-day as favorably situated as Des Moines The present companies

so far as railroads are concerned. are the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad, I. F. Royce, Division Superintendent Des Moines, Indianola & Missouri, I. F. Rovec. Superintendent: Des Moines, Winterset & Southwestern, HI. F. Royce, Superintendent: Des Moines & Fort Dodge, George W. Ogilvie, General Freight and Ticket Agent: C. I. Gilmore, Superintend- ent : Des Moines & Minnesota. (Narrow Gauge), James Callanan, President : J. J. Smart, Superintendent: Keokuk & Des Moines, H. Coykendall, Agent. The Rock Island Company will extend their line front Oskaloosa to connect; with the Indianola Road, and the Albia, Knoxville &| Des Moines (which is built as far as Knoxville, Marion doun- ty.) will be completed ta this city | swhich will give us di- rect communication with St. Louis. Ex-Governor Sam- uel Merrill is the President of the Albia Road. The question of its extension is already being agitated, and it is altogether probable that we shall soon have direct con- nection with the south of lowa through . this road. . The

Des Moines & Fort I odge are talking of extending their line north. . The Des Sloines & Indianola branch of the C., R. I. & P. R. R. will be extended south to Chariton. There is also a project on foot for the extension of the. Des Moines & Minnesota road north from Ames. This done, Des Moines is the focus for direct lines leading north, south, east and west, and connecting with the lang- est cities in all parts of the country.

East Des Moines -- Has three school buildings with a seating capacity [ of about H,oob. `The value of school property is estimit kl at ist so,odo, making an aggregate for the city of Saro ooo, invested in the schools of our city, The University of Des Moines, under the auspices of the Baptist denomin toing is prospering finely.

The Des Moines Law School may also be numbered among the thriving educational institutions of the city. Des Moines is one of the most healthy places, as weare informed by the city sentoh, 'in the country.

It is gratifying do knows that the price of real estate in the city is by no man's ane ted by the hard times !!! It re- mains firm, fand to-day rodd busines flots are worth fully four times as much as ten years since. The reason for this is found in the steady, substantial progress of the city! any kind goes begging for a tenant; instead there are loud calls for more business blocks and more res dences ..

We learn from our builders and contractors that there has been an unusually large number of dwellings houses erected this last summer. The coming season will prob- ably be one of unusual activity in building, that will wit- ness a large and rapid growth of our city.

The principal buildings which arrest the attention on entering the place, are the State (House and Public School Building on Capitol Hill, in the east part of town, the Uni- versity building on a hill in the west, and the Court House, four very fine and expensive Public School buildings, United States Post Office, the new C., R. I. & P. R. R. depot, the many fine large church edifices, together with many fine residences, as elegant and costly as there are in the State. A new State House is now being built, which will cost an enormous sum - say two million dollars-and is to be one of the finest in the United States.

We believe that IDes Moines will eventually become the metropolis, as it is the capital, of lowa. No city in the State dan point to so rapida progress in the past few years and there are none whose signs of prosperity in the pres- Ynt exceed those of our city. [ In point of architectural and natural beauty she can vie with cities many years her senior, in railroad facilities the bears the palm from any town in the State, in manufacturing and commerce she makes a showing which might well make proud much larger cities, while in the character of her citizens, the mu-i nificence of their charities, the public spiritedness and en- terprise of their business life, she stands without a peer. Viewed in the light of these facts, Des Moines possesses no ordinary interest ; and he who studies the situation dis- interestedly will not undervalue its importance, or ignore its well-grounded hopes of future prosperity and greatness.
