POLK CITY.

(This pleasant country village is one of the most ancient orign dates away States troops were
in the History of folk county. | Its bao" to, the tinte then the United stationed in the long log barracks on Coop Point, known As Fort Des Moines. . Mr. George Beebee came to the country from the far East in 1846 and settled 'on Big Oreck. Seeing a good speculation in the enterprise -- dyep if the tojen should prove a failure-He proceeded to plat and lay out the first and original town lots . In order diagonally to im prove the location the town was laid out
northeast and southwest. Dr. Bennett |ivas one of the influential men of the day, and assisted in laying out the Des Moines | Addition - Wahkonsa- upon the northwest of the town proper. In 1858, Mr. Hopkins built the Hotel property hov owned by Mr. Warden' and known as the Roll Citt Hlouse. In 1853, the Methodists, organ- zed a society, and in -1866 built in church . The edifice was a very fine one then, and still is suitable to all the wants of the people. " The first pastor was George W. Palmer. In 1864 a large and very fine school building was erected for deucationall purposes. The school was divided into I three grades, competent teachers were chosen and to day there is but slight chando in the system of management. Beebe's Mill, the first in the northern part of Polk conn- yi was erected in 1866. In 1872 the Christian Society i was organized into la church and an edifica created.
1
In the spring of 1875 the matter of incorporation was discussed, caucuses were held, election day came and the les my of the city with the fortune of the treasure be- came a fixed fact.|The Mayor was A. D. I Gekman; Re-

corder, J. A. Kuntz Treasurer, A. L. Clingan: Assessor, T. L. Dyer; and N. R, Kuntz, O. N. Rogers, William G. Swim; W. J. Wilson and R. B. Arnistrong, were the first aldermen.
. In October of the year 1872, the Masonic Lodge-05. erative Nol . 308 -- was organized. It has steadily im- proved since the first meeting, has largely increased its membership and is now officered as follows, viz:
N. R. Kuntz. W. M , C. J. Clark, .S. W., S. F. Don- aldson; J. W., W. J. Wilson, Secretary and R. B. Arm- strong Treasurer!
Their meetings are held in their hall.
The younger of the two Lodges, the Polk City IIO. of O. F., No. 300, was organized in the month of November 1874. The officers of the Lodge at present are; N. K. Henington, N. G., W. J. Wilson, V. G., G. J. Clark, R. S. A. C. Truesdale, C. S., G. F. Hubbard, Treasurer,
Polk City also did her full share (luring the civil war, In 1863 Co. "A", roth lowa, was here formed, and Cant, McCalla, who was afterward promoted to Major of the 10th, was its first officer. Co. "B" of the 23d Iowa, was also largely organized here | Captain O. J. Clark was the commanding officer. . Ile afterward became Lieu !! Colonel of the 23d Iowa.' 1
The town lies on the w$ of Sec. I, Towin. 80, Range 25, upon a high and dry elevation. The surrounding country is well watered By Big Creek and Hy |the Des Moines river upon the west., Coal is found near by and nex- haustible mines will soon be developed and in working operation. Stonei suitable for foundation purposes abounds near by, and in a short time when the quarries are prop- erly opened, owners feel confident of supplying the market with good building stone.
Polk City commands a good trade. It is far enough away from a larger place to be independent, and it lies in the heart of one of the most productive sections of the Hawkeye State. Well watered, well timbered and pro- vided with fuel and building stone lying at its very feet: with thef Des Moines & Minnesota Railroad as a means of transportation either north or south: with churches and schools and a quiet and peaceful civil government, Polk City is bound at no distant day to be an inland city of wealth and prosperity.

MITCHELLVILLE
In the year 1844, when our Polk county was almost uninhabited, save by the red man, Hon. Thomas Mitchell Jemigrated from Fairfield, this Stitel to Beaver Township and settled at Apple Grove, on the Iowa City road, opened a tavern, and in 1867 he fashioned the plan of the village; i which to day bears, his name! _ It lies one-half mile from the east line of the county and about sixteen miles east of Des Moines on the Chidayp, Rock Island & Pa ... cific R. R., upon as pretty a trace of rolling prairie as lies between the rising and the setting sun .. E. J. Valentine was the first merchantt
A. J. Grismer, during the year of 1868, erected a hotel, which is now kept by D. R. Hoxie, and known as the Hoxid House! .
The year 1870 saw N. W. Cram, the present Mayor, and Geo. D. Moore, entered upon business, and Jones Brothers' brick block erected! ! The station on the K. & D. M. R. R. three-quarters of a, mile south of town, called Nobleton, is, in reality, South Mitchellville. | Quite a business is now carried on here by the grain mien, who Have built their elevators upon the K. & D. M. track! | Coal and lumber also are there sold by Fred. Strong,
The Seminary was built in 1872 and 1873, at a cost of $25|doo. | It lids in the southwest of the town proper. {The institution is under control of a board of trustees, ap- pointed by the Idwa Universalist Convention. Rey: J. R. Sage is the Principal. | Hon! Thomas Mitchell our well known and popular State Senator, is President of the Ex- ecutive Committee. |Many of the best business blocks were built during this and the following season- +among them the Masonic Hall, built by Russell & Valentine, upon the north side of Second street, and Valentine An- drews put up his hall, which has since been christened (Andrews' Opera House.". The Christian church was erected in 1874- dost about $2,500. The present pastor is Rev. J. B. Vawter. The incorporation of the town was in the summer of The first election resulted as follows, viz: Mayor, N. W. Cram: Recorder, E. L. Fields: Council 1-M. S. Kimball, Geo. THE HOXIE HOUSE ..
Old "Father Moxie" has the reputation of being one of the most genial and obliging landlords upon the O., R. I. & P. R. R., He is an old resident, knows the county per fectly and can give the traveller much good advice as to manner and mode of traveling, and can always "tell you the way." "Plenty to eat and merry good cheer, with nothing to drink, ? id his motto.
If we may be allowed to predict of the future we would say this: Too near Des Moines to be a great city, yet far enoligh away to be a good town, we know of no place of the same size which presents better opportunities for the investment of capital, or which promises a more en- during prosperity.
