He enjoys an, extensive patronage also among people of Catholic faith, and his stock consists in part of Catholic books and church goods, being in this line the largest retail dealer in the State. Mr. Muelhaupt has been engaged in the general book and stationery business in Des Moines for a number of years, and has a thriving and profitable trade.

This firm commenced . busi- ness in 1861 on a small scale and with limited capital, but their business has steadily increased until they have become one of the leading manufacturing firms in Iowa. ||They, manufacture steam boilers, lard and water tanks, smokestacks, jail work, fire proof vault doors and shutters, and all kinds of wrought iron work. They employ a large force of workmen, their work a first-class and they have an enviable reputation for integrity and honorable dealing. Call upon them at East Court avenue, corner of Front street.
ALLEN & CO., having removed their factory to |209 and 211 Fifth street, are prepared to receive orders for shirts, and guarantee a perfect fit. They have been engaged in this business in Des Moines for a number of years, and have met with gratifying success,. In connection with their shirt factory; they Wy ve established a laundry where they have ample facili- ties for executing large or small orders in this line.
L. HARBACH is the most extensive manufacturer and dealer in furniture west of Chicago, occupying three large brick blocks for his immense business. His factory is located on Second street, and is 44x132 feet, three stories and basement, in which are the most improved modern machinery and appli- andes fir manufacturing all kinds of furniture. His retail sales- rooms are at 223 and 225 Third street, occupying a brick build- ing 44*132 feet, four stories and basement, which is filled with the most complete and extensive stock of furniture of elegant designs and artistic finish, including all grades, from the plain- est to the most elaborate, and everything desirable in the line of house furnishing goods. In addition to these two buildings, Mr. Harbach has this year erected a 44x132, five stores and basement, of his extensive business. In the largest assortment in the State, fine block on Second street, for the better accommodation line of carpets he carries the" from the finest Wilton and Axmin der through all grades to the cheapest, His retail house contains an elegant hydraulic elevator, and all the arrangements are made with a view to. the convenience and accommodation of his dastomers. CHARLES HEWITT, Walnut, corner of Second streets. Des Moines is not behind her sister cities in the magnitude and extent of her wholesale grocery houses, and one of the largest and most reliable of these is the house of Charles Hewitt, occu- pying his brick block, corner of Walnut land Second streets. This house carries a full line of fancy groceries, teas, coffees, spices, canned goods and grocers sundries. He makes a spec- ialty of foreign and domestic fruits, nuts, confectionery, cigars, land tobacco, sweet cider find fresh oysters. This house, was established in Des Moines in 1861, and from that time to the present, has had a successful business career, and the trade pow extends over a large territory in the Northwest."
B. C. WHITE & CO; have removed the well known Capi- tal Mills to the corner of
East Third and Vine streets, where they manufacture and deal in the best brands of flour, feed, etc., operating upon the roller system, | Located as they are, with railroads centering in Des Moines from the finest wheat-growing regions, they are enabled to select and buy the very best adapted to flouring, and they keep constantly on hand the best brands of winter and spring wheat flour, winter wheat graham, as well as bolted meal, bran and shorts. The article of flour may appropriately be classed as one of the most important of our material resources, and the " old reliable." Capital Mills manu- facture none but the best.
B. C. LOCKWOOD) is one of the largest retail dealers in fine and selected groceries, having succeeded the firm of Shank- land & Lockwood, at 202 Fifth street. His stock consists in part of sugars and coffees, teas and spices, wooden and willow ware, and fipe tobaccos and cigars. He also deals in flour and . feed as well as, country produce, for which the highest cash price is paid. Having made the requisite arrangements with Mr. Lockwood is enabled to sell
producers of butter and eggs, these indispensable articles at the lowest prices, and all orders from customers are delivered free of charge, by wagons owned, by the house. He is familiar with every branch of the retail trade, is constantly attentive to business, and is meeting with the success which such attention deserves.

In addition to their assortment of books, stationery, blank books gold pens, wall paper, &c., they deal in artists materials,: and niske a specialty of fine steel engravings, and oil and water color paintings. They manufacture frames of every descrip- tion, style and size, from the plainest to the most elaborate, from the massive frames for large pictures, down to the smallest sizes. " This firm succeeded the retail department of Mills & Co., and islocated in Mills Block, 222 Fourth street.

This house is comparatively young in Des Moines, having been located here only about a year, [ 'ut they have already established a fine business. |Their; place of business is in Mills Block, at number 220 Fourth street, where they have a full stock of dty goods and notions. . Silks and dless Foods are the leading specialty of this house, and they also havela fine assortment of cloaks, dolmans, and wraps. Their Caci ties for replenishing their stock with the most desir- able article's at short notice, enables them at all times to keep a full lige of the latest and freshest styles, and we predict for them a constant increase of business.
W. H. HATCH. One of the oldest established and best know[ ] clothing houses in the city, is that of W. H. Hatch, 405 Waln't street, where he carries a large stock, consisting of a gen- eral T'he of clothing, gents' furuishing goods, and all articles usually found in a house of this description, and also deals in hats and caps. In addition to this, he carries in stock a large line off trunk valises, traveling bags, shawl straps, and all articles in this Ifle of trade. Mr. Hatch has been identified with the busi- ness interests of Des Moines for many years, and has gained a reputi ion as an honorable and upright business man.
THOMAS E. RUDD's domestic bakery is established on the come y of Third and Walnut streets, where he sells fresh bread, cake! bies, Buns, fruits, candies, &c. His place of business is supplied with all the necessary fixtures and appliances for suc- cessfi ly conducting the business, and in addition to his bakery, he has lunch rooms where the business man, farmer, or any one in need of it, can obtain a first class lunch. Mr. Rudd has been in business, in Des Moines a number of years, and has a thriving trade !!

LOUIS HECK. This gentleman has but recently removed { to our city, having assumed the management of the branch { house of Story & Camp at 218 Fifth street, where he sells the. U celebrated Decker Bros., Story & Camp; Haines Bros., Brad- \ bury. Mathushek, Pease and Simpson pianos, also Estey and Story & Camp organs. Besides these, his stock, which is com- plete in every department, includes all varieties of musical in- struments, sheet music and all articles legitimately pertaining to U this branch of business.
E. H. COLLINS & SON, contractors for steam heating and ventilating apparatus, are located at 320 Court avenue, where they deal in wrought iron pipe, cast and malleable fit- tings, cistern, well, force and lift pumps. They make a specialty of steam heating, and have done some of the finest work of this description to be found in our city. They also carry in Astock; all varieties of plumbers and gas fitters materials. Al -- though these gentlemen have but recently removed to our city, we are pleased to note that they are meeting with well de- served success.

"The linseed meal; as food for stock, is rapidly becom- ing popular among stock feeders and dairy men, it having been proved by blemical analysis that one pound contains nutritious and fattening qualities equivalent to three pounds of corn or if pats, or five pounds of hay.
