For excellence of workmanship, the house takes high rank, employing only competent workmen, and their large business is constantly increasing.
HOLLAND & NEW are doing a live business; at 320 Sixth street, as house, sign and fresco painters, and wholesale and retail dealers in window, plate, and cut glass, wall paper, paints, oils, lead and painters supplies. They also do artistic paper hanging. Particular attention is paid to the higher de- grees of painting, gilding, and sign writing, in which they are proficient.
DES MOINES BAKERY CO. This is one of the most complete and thoroughly equipped establishments in' Des Moines, located at 222 Second street, and they manufacture all grades of crackers, as well as fruit biscuits, dracknels, jumbles, ginger snaps, frosted creams, lemon snaps, oat meal, graham, corn hills, etc., for the trade. conducted by W. W. and H.

The trade in groceries considered as a branch of commerce is one of the most Impor- tant in this country, representing immense capital and giving employment to thousands of persons. The city of Des Moines is not behind her sister cities in the magnitude and extent of its wholesale grocery, houses, and prominent among them is the house of Sperry, Watt & Garver. |They occupy their fine new block, corner of Walnut and Second streets. This is 76x80 feet, three stories and basement, having all modern improve- ments and conveniently arranged for receiving and shipping the immense stock of goods which they carry, and is filled with a complete line of staple and fancy groceries, teas, coffees, spices, canned goods, &c. LI FISHER & SON, wholesale flour and commission mer- chants, have their office at 625 east Sycamore street, where they pay the highest price for Hides; tallow, grease, &c. They arelagents for the St. Paul roller mills flour, for the state of Iowa, and do a general produce , and commission business. They have been residents of Des Moines for many years, and from their acquaintance with business men as well as their in- dustry and attention to business we predict for them an'exten- sive trade.
WAERS & COTTLE commenced business as retail grocers on Walnut street, a few years since, but during the time they continuedl in
that line, their trade increased so rapidly that they disposed of their retail business, and now confine themselves ex- clusively to the wholesale trade, doing a large business in flour cand produce, butter and eggs. They are now building a fine brick block, three stories and basement, which will be entirely used for their extensive business, and as soon as this is com- pketed they will be at home at 420 Court avenue.

W L. WHITE, 506 Walnut street is worthy of more than passing notice in connection with the boot and shoe business of this city, having been engaged in this branch of trade since 1871. He employs about; twenty men, many of whom are skilled artisans, and is, therefore, ena- bledito place upon the market, goods of first quality and work- manship. He manufactures creamery engines and outfits, mill machinery and supplies, and all kinds of iron and brass castings, . also iron work for buildings, iron fencing, bridge bolts, mining machinery, eto: Mr. Aulmann' is a young man, but is pos- sessed of practical experience, and gives his personal attention to his business in all its details.
MOGELBERG & FRANZ are proprietors of the Metro- politan barber shop and bath rooms, the finest establishment of the kind in the state, and enjoy an extensive and lucrative pat- ronage. Their rooms are elegantly fitted up with all modern improvements and everything is arranged for the comfort and conitenience of their numerous patrons. They may be found at 5 15 and 517 Walnut street, and in addition to the foregoing business, they are manufacturets and dealers in barbers furni- ture'and supplies, steam grinders etc. These gentlemen have long been identified with the business interests of Des Moines, where they have built up a business second to none in their line, and in which they may well feel a justifiable pride.
N. E. WALSH is a manufacturer of plumbing work, steam heating and gas-fitting arrangements, wrought iron fence, etc., in which he gives employment to a large force of men. He. deals in all goods used in connection with steam, water, and gas, and is himself a practical plumber, gas and steam fitter, fitting up stores, private residences, and public buildings in the most thorough manner. He carres in stock one of the best assortments of fine gas fixtures, chandeliers, and brackets to be found in the city, as well as all varieties of plumbers' materials. The location of this house, 309 Fourth street, is one of the most desirable in the city, and Mr. Walsh has a thriving and prosperous business.
MILLER & HUNTINGTON are contractors for artificial stone work, having their office at 712 Walnut street, where they are prepared to fill contracts for jobbing work in stone, brick, cement, etc. They are the sole owners in Polk county, and . manufacturers of Schillinger's Patent Artificial Stone Pave- ment, and many of the finest walks in the city were laid by them. CALLANAN COLLEGE .-- This excellent school is, de- signed chiefly for the education of young ladies, and the board- "ing' department is limited to them, but young gentlemen are here prepared for college. It offers carefully selected classical, scientific and literary courses, as well as modern languages, fine arts and music. Special attention is given to elocution, and also to the culture of manners. This school occupies the beau; tiful, and commodious grounds at the corner of Pleasant and Eleventh streets, which are quiet and retired, yet near enough for convenience to the business portion of the city. The young ladies are received into the family of the president and precep- tress, and receive the care and oversight of: the home .. In addition to the regular courses of study, any who cannot pursue these, may take an elective course suited to health, means and future pursuits. We take pleasure in cordially recommending this school to those who contemplate sending their daughters from home to complete their education.
THE IOWA BUSINESS COLLEGE is so well known in the city and State, that any commendation of it, seems almost sur perfluous, and yet. we could scarcely refrain from mentioning this institution in connection with the excellent educational ad- vantages of our city. The value of a thorough business eduda- tion can not be over-estimated, and that the advantages afforded by this school for obtaining this knowledge are appreciated, is shown by the increased attendance year by year, necessitating an enlargement of their seating capacity, including the addition this year, of a second hall 70x24 feet. Their system of instruc- tion in book-keeping is very thorough and complete, as also in the telegraph department, and the student has the advantage of actual business practice, a main line :running to various parts of the city, on winch are established railroad and telegraph offices, doing actual business, and students are required to keep a strict l'account of all messeges sent aud received, to bill and receive . bils for freight, and to make out daily and weekly reports which are sent to the general office for inspection. This is i only one department of the college, but it shows the complete- ness of their system of instruction, and we know of no better

They are established in Rollins' Block; corner of Fourth and Walnut streets! 1 MILLS & CO .- In 1856, this firm established a printing. offies, and in 1858, a book-bindeny, since which time they have added different branches of industry, so that to day they are printers, book-publishers, lithographers, stereotypers, book-bind- ers,/ manufacturing stationers, and paper box manufacturers. They have the largest printing establishment in the West, and. all work done is first class. Their bindery is one of the best west of Chicago. | At present they are State printers, and have also been State binders. In the publication of books, they makea specialty of law-books, but are publishing many first class work which are sold through their subscription agency as well as by the books sellers generally. " Their map department is one of importance, being perfect in all details | The latest map of, Iowal is published by them, and is said to be the finest ever pup- lished of the State. They are also the publishers of our city map. Some of the finest lithographic work we have ever seen is from this house. Their stereotype department is perfect in all respects and under the management of first class experienced workmen. A paper box manufactory is the latest addition to their business establishment a few months since, in which are employed only first class workmen, who are at present making a specialty of square work; boxes for boots; and shoes, candy etc., but effect soon to commence the manufacture of all kinds of roundi Work, for druggists use and general, merchandile. For this branch of industry we predict, that ere long, as the city is growing rapidly, they will be, one of the leading maqu- facturersinf Des Moines. The building: in which Mills & Co., are located, is the well known flowa Industrial Exposition" building situated on the corner of Eighth and Walnut streets. ;! It is a three story brick 132x132, is one of the best built structures in the State and was purchased by them last year and refitted to accommodate their various branches of industry, of which the city and State, may well be proud!
